Site engineer : Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries: £22,000 - £26,000.
  • Range of typical salaries for those with experience and/or qualifications: £25,000 - £35,000.
  • Range of typical salaries at senior level: £35,000 - £50,000.
  • Salaries vary considerably according to the location, sector and size of the employing organisation, with salaries normally higher in London.
  • Salaries often rise sharply when you achieve chartered status and gain experience.
  • The working week is usually 35-40 hours, but may include early starts or late finishes. Some weekend working may be necessary to meet deadlines, and overtime opportunities are common.
  • The work is both office-based and conducted on site. Site visits and inspections are conducted outside in all weathers and office facilities may be located in temporary buildings or converted premises.
  • Self-employment or freelance work is possible, especially for experienced engineers with chartered status.
  • Part-time work or career breaks may be possible in some organisations, although fairly uncommon in this industry.
  • Women continue to be under-represented in the profession with only 15% of engineering graduates being fenale, and in construction only 14% of construction jobs are undertaken by women. However, membership figures from the professional bodies suggest that this is changing with an increasing number of women entering the industry each year. A number of associations have been set up to attract more women into the industry such as Women into Science, Engineering and Construction (WISE) and the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC) .
  • ConstructionSkills  has identified that ethnic minorities are under represented throughout the construction industry and coordinates awareness campaigns to promote diversity in the workforce and disseminate equal opportunity materials and information.
  • Jobs exist throughout the UK, with plenty of opportunities to work all over the country on a variety of sites.
  • Opportunities overseas are available. However, such posts usually require experience and are rarely suitable for new graduates.
  • A reasonable level of fitness and mobility is required as the work can be physically demanding. Site inspections may involve climbing ladders, or visiting areas of sites where access is difficult. Appropriate safety equipment, such as protective boots and headgear, must be worn on site.
  • The dress code tends to be conservative for meetings, and it is expected that site engineers will be smartly dressed even when visiting sites.
There may be considerable travel within a working day, and absence from home overnight may occasionally be necessary. A company car is not usually offered, but mileage for site visits may be payable.
