Sport and exercise psychologist : Salary and conditions

  • Sport and exercise psychologists will generally start out on around £27,000.
  • Many sport and exercise psychologists combine consultancy work with university or college lecturing, and with experience salaries can rise to £45,000.
  • More senior psychologists/lecturers can earn up to £55,000.
  • Experienced consultants working with top professional athletes can expect to charge around £800-£1,000 per day in consultancy fees.
  • Salaries vary according to the type of employer; with the salaries of those employed by professional clubs or national governing bodies tending to be higher than those of amateur ones.
  • Working hours for practitioners can be varied and depend on the client and the nature of the sport. Consultancy work could be nine to five; however it is equally likely that weekend work or fitting within the timescales of specific sporting tournaments will be required. Hours within education or healthcare settings are mainly nine to five.
  • Work environments vary depending on the client and could include an office base within a university campus, GP surgery or hospital, or field settings such as the athletes’ village at major sports events, the team training base or employers’ premises.

  • Travel within a working day is common and, depending on the client, you may be required to travel away from home. A sport psychologist may form part of a support team travelling with the client to competitions and tournaments locally, nationally and internationally.
