Statistician : Salary and conditions

  • Range of typical starting salaries outside of London: £22,500 - £31,500. Average salaries across the UK including London: £22,500 - £39,000.
  • Range of typical salaries at senior level/with experience (e.g. after 10 - 15 years in the role): £30,000 - £69,500 with some even higher.
  • Salaries vary depending upon employer, location, qualifications and experience.
  • Salaries are generally higher in business, commerce and industry than in the government and medical sectors.
  • Flexible working hours are common, allowing statisticians to choose the number of hours they work around fixed core hours. Paid overtime is occasionally available.
  • Statisticians tend to be mainly office based, although they often travel to attend meetings with stakeholders and occasionally attend regional, national and international conferences.
  • Medical statisticians spend more than half the time working alone.
  • Statisticians (particularly in the pharmaceutical industry) usually operate as part of a multidisciplinary project team.
  • Statisticians may be self-employed, often in a consultancy role.
  • Part-time work, home-working and career breaks are often possible.
  • Jobs are quite widely available with opportunities in London and other major provincial cities. Most jobs in the pharmaceutical industry are in the South East of England.
  • The pharmaceutical industry provides opportunities for travel abroad to discuss the design of trials, collect information, discuss results and meet with regulatory authorities.
  • Some international secondments are open to government statisticians.
