Trading standards officer : Salary and conditions

  • Local government trading standards officers (TSOs) might expect to earn £24,000 - £34,000.
  • The average salary for a senior TSO ranges from £30,000 to top level salaries for senior managers of up to £70,000.
  • Private sector opportunities are usually paid at senior manager level and above.
  • Salary information is a guide only, as there is considerable regional variation. There may also be local agreements in place. For further information about salaries it is advisable to contact your local council directly.
  • TSOs usually work a 37-hour week with occasional anti-social hours in order to visit premises such as nightclubs and Sunday markets. Flexi-time systems often operate and, in some authorities, staff may work from home.
  • Although the role of a TSO is essentially office-based, there is also a lot of outdoor work, including site visits, events to raise awareness and advisory work in schools.
  • Work is often carried out by TSOs working alone within defined local authority boundaries, but TSOs may also work in a team, and often with other authorities, primarily the police force.
  • Opportunities for self-employment do exist, with some TSOs offering consultancy services to large companies.
  • Part-time and job-share work is usually available. Career breaks are possible, particularly in larger authorities, although returners will be required to catch up on changing legislation.
  • Secondments are sometimes possible, e.g. to national authorities or regulatory bodies, such as the Food Standards Agency .
  • Protective clothing is required for visits to outdoor, dangerous or dirty sites. Smart dress is required for court visits.
  • The work is varied, challenging and rewarding, although at times demanding and stressful.
  • Travel within a working day is common as a considerable amount of time is spent visiting traders.
