The institution

Birmingham City University is a large and vibrant institution, providing a stimulating and dynamic educational environment for all of its students. Situated in the UK's 'second city' and catering for over 23,500 students, the University is rightly seen as an educational powerhouse both nationally and abroad. As an institution we have a longstanding and distinctive focus on research, professional training and creative practice. We combine this focus with strong industry links, business partnerships and public service collaborations.

Our lecturers have real-life experience of business and industry, we enjoy close relationships with leading employers and we are in the process of investing £180million in new facilities. Our commitment to high-quality teaching, innovative practice and cutting-edge research, combined with our location, history and reputation ensures that Birmingham City University ranks amongst the very best modern universities in the country.

Our commitment to putting students first has been recognised with one of the highest accolades we could hope to achieve. Our pioneering Student Academic Partners Scheme - typical of our unique partnership approach - won us the prestigious 2010 Times Higher Education Award for 'Outstanding Support for Students'.

The University offers a broad range of specialist postgraduate courses and professional development programmes. All of our courses lead to a full range of postgraduate qualifications including Certificates, Diplomas, Masters and Research degrees and Professional accreditation.

Postgraduate subjects include:

Research

Birmingham City University has been officially recognised for its world-leading research by the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise - a government-backed quality audit.

As a result of this influential nationwide survey, Birmingham City University is now part of a select band of universities spearheading research excellence at the highest level. The resulting increase in funding has directly led to the development and implementation of our new Centres of Excellence, acting as a focus for research, innovation and enterprise in specific areas of expertise.

This has confirmed the University's reputation for discovering new knowledge that has a positive impact on the real world. This cutting-edge research is varied in its academic subject range, with particular strengths in arts, humanities and social sciences. The outstanding development of our research activities has firmly repositioned the University as an aspiration leader amongst its peers.

Facilities

Birmingham City University provides cutting-edge technologies and learning tools across all of our courses. From mock operating theatres, courtrooms and classrooms to state-of-the-art video production suites and photographic studios, our students have the perfect learning environment to develop the skills they need.

We have recently opened the £8.5million Doug Ellis Sports Centre, comprising an eight-court sports hall and 80-station fitness suite, at the City North Campus. Other recent developments include a £30 million redevelopment of our City South Campus, home to our faculty of health, and the £10 million refurbishment of our New Technology Institute building.

Over the next two years, a new £60 million building will be added to our campus at Millennium Point, in the city centre, to house our art and design courses, with cutting-edge technology including industry-standard photographic and TV studios. The University is committed to a second phase of this development which will further enhance our city centre presence.

Our plans for a city centre campus and a new home for our Conservatoire, coupled with investment already carried out elsewhere, will bring the total spending on our buildings in the next few years to around £180million.

Location

Birmingham is the perfect setting for a university that works to equip its students with real-world skills. Home to the largest professional and financial services centre outside London, almost half of the UK's conference and exhibition trade, many high-tech manufacturers and a thriving creative sector, our students build valuable links with local companies during the course of their studies.

Living in Birmingham offers you the chance to live in an exciting, diverse city with world-class restaurants, entertainment and shops. The city is home to more than one million people from a range of different cultures and ethnic groups, including the UK's largest student population outside London.

Its friendly population is what makes Birmingham the dynamic, multicultural city that is - and also one of the largest cities in Europe offering a heady mix of galleries, music, restaurants and bars.
