Experience Perth

Perth is the capital city of Western Australia and is recognised internationally for offering an amazing standard of living to both its visitors and residents. The largest Australian state; Western Australia maintains strong relationships with neighbouring countries and is a gateway to Asian cities. Residents of Perth enjoy more hours of sunshine than any other Australian capital city.

Perth's attractions are many and varied: sunny blue skies; a comfortable climate; popular bars and restaurants; all types of shops and services; cinemas, theatres and music venues; international food courts; lively markets; sports facilities; excellent public transport; plus many more.

"I have done lots of things here which I don't think would have been possible if I had gone to uni in the UK—like being able to go to the beach! There is a big mix of cultures here and everyone is very accepting. I've met people form all over the world and it's really interesting to learn about their countries. This is an opportunity of a lifetime."

Claire Assiter
UK student: Bachelor of Arts

In October 2011, Perth hosted the Commonwealth leaders' Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). Every two years, the leaders from each country gather to agree on collective policies and initiatives for world issues. The 2011 Perth-based CHOGM provided an opportunity for the leaders to meet in Australia and experience the culture of Perth.

Research capabilities

Curtin has established four areas of research strength: health; information communication technology and emerging technologies; minerals and energy; and sustainable development. The multidisciplinary and collaborative native of Curtin's research programs is made possible not only by the University's solid research partnerships with industry, but also by the diversity of high-impact research centres and institutes.

In 2010, the Australian Government conducted an Excellence in Research survey of Higher Education Institutions throughout the country. At the four-digit Field of Research level, Curtin achieved ratings of four and five—above and well above world standard—for analytical chemistry, physical chemistry, geochemistry, geology, curriculum and pedagology, medical microbiology and cultural studies. Overall, Curtin achieved world standard or higher rankings in 20 discipline groups.
