An overview
The Institute of Education (IOE) has been providing first-class teacher training, in partnership with schools and colleges in the London region, for over 100 years. A graduate college of the University of London, we are a world-renowned centre for education studies and related social sciences. According to the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise results, we top the league tables in education research in both quality and quantity. Across all subjects, the IOE's performance places it in the top 10 universities in the UK. Teacher training programmesIn the latest Training and Development Agency for Schools NQT Survey, 83 per cent of IOE newly qualified teachers rated the overall quality of their training as good or very good. All our initial teacher training programmes were rated as outstanding or good with outstanding features in our most recent Ofsted inspection. Our Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE) programmes are modular and carry masters-level credits. You may be able to use these credits to contribute towards a masters qualification in education, and we can continue to support you throughout your teaching career with a huge variety of professional development programmes.

Further studyWe offer higher degrees in all areas of education and related aspects of the social sciences and professional practice. We also offer short courses and host conferences. Masters programmesWe deliver more than fifty programmes at masters-level in areas including health; international development; media, culture and communication; psychology and sociology; as well as education and teaching across all phases and in a number of specific subject fields. Research programmesThe IOE has a graduate research community of more than 800 students, by far the largest in the field of education in the UK, and one of the biggest for social research. We lead an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) accredited doctoral training centre in partnership with Birkbeck, SOAS and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, which offers a total of 26 studentships per annum. Research topics include health, welfare, children's rights, international development, the social sciences, media, psychology and technology, as well as education. Many prestigious research centres and projects are based at the Institute and we attract research funding from a wide range of organisations, both in the UK and overseas.
