School of Advanced study - University of London

The School of Advanced Study unites ten specialist humanities and social science research Institutes at the centre of the University of London. Located in Bloomsbury the School has strong links with the Colleges of the University and with the wider national and international research community in each of its disciplines. The School and Institutes run a varied programme of seminars, conferences, lectures, workshops, and research training events. The combined collections of the Institute libraries and the Senate House Library form the University of London Research Library Services.

The School has a unique atmosphere of both specialised scholarly study and interdisciplinary collegiality. There are 270 Master's and Research students in the School who, with staff and researchers, form a friendly and lively academic community.

Institute of Advanced Legal Studies

The Institute, with its Library, is the principal centre for postgraduate study and research for law students in the University of London.

The LLM in Advanced Legislative Studies examines issues related to the legislative process, constitutional law, the methods of drafting in a modern democratic context, legislative ethics and law reform.
Research degrees in legislative studies including: arbitration, comparative law, discrimination, European law, human rights, law enforcement, legal education, legal practice, legislative drafting, commercial law, economic crime.

Institute of Commonwealth Studies

The Institute of Commonwealth Studies promotes inter-disciplinary and inter-regional research on the Commonwealth and its member nations in the fields of history, politics, economics and other social sciences, and in subjects such as development, environment, health, migration, class, and race.

The MA in Understanding and Securing Human Rights provides a unique multidisciplinary perspective and practical training in human rights.
The MSc in Globalisation and the Commonwealth provides a multidisciplinary and policy-oriented perspective of globalisation, human security and development.
Research degrees in Commonwealth studies relating to Human Rights, Globalisation, Development, Politics, and Commonwealth History.

Institute of English Studies

The Institute is a centre for advanced study and research in literatures in the English language, the history of the book, palaeography and manuscript studies.

The MA in National and International Literatures in English explores the historical antecedents to "postcolonial" literatures as well as specific national and regional identities in literatures in English.
The MA in the History of the Book considers the book as an object, its physical aspects, manufacture and trade, but also as a key to social and cultural relations.
Research degrees in multidisciplinary English studies from eighteenth to twentieth century topics and the history of the book.

Institute of Germanic & Romance Studies

The Institute is a centre for the study of the cultures of German-speaking and Romance language countries across a range of disciplines in the humanities.

The MA in Cultural Memory explores the many different ways in which culture is based on the construction, manipulation and transmission of memories.
The MRes/MA in Modern Languages: Cultural Change and Exchange is a literary and cultural studies degree with a flexible structure for students with one or two modern foreign languages.
Research degrees in French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese comparative cultural studies, the history of ideas, and literature.

Institute of Historical Research

The Institute of Historical Research is a renowned resource for researchers in history with an outstanding library and excellent digital and print resources.

The MA in Contemporary British History studies British History over the last century in relation to other countries and regions, covering a range of approaches in economic, social, cultural, political, and diplomatic history.
The MA in Metropolitan and Regional History explores the nature of the relationships between large cities and regions in history, focusing on the history of London and the English localities from the middle ages to the present day.
Research degrees in medieval history, early modern history, modern history, local and urban history including the history of London.

Institute for the Study of the Americas

The Institute for the Study of the Americas provides a focus for research and postgraduate teaching on the Americas - Canada, the United States, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Warburg Institute

The Warburg Institute, dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the classical tradition and the abiding influence of the ancient world on every aspect of European culture, occupies a unique place in European intellectual life.

The MA in Cultural and Intellectual History 1300-1650 provides an introduction to interdisciplinary research in the cultural and intellectual history of Western Europe from the late Middle Ages to the Early Modern period.
Research degrees in combined historical studies and the study of the classical tradition in cultural and intellectual history 1200-1700.
