World-leading research

Macquarie is home to internationally-renowned researchers, meaning Macquarie students learn from teachers who are leaders in their fields.

Macquarie is ranked fourth in Australia for research of the highest possible quality. In the Australian Government's Excellence in Research for Australia initiative, Macquarie achieved a maximum 5 rating (indicating outstanding performance well above world standard) in biological sciences, Earth sciences, environmental sciences, physical sciences and psychology and cognitive sciences.

The UK's Times Higher Education ranked Macquarie as number one in Australia and 14th worldwide for environmental sciences research.

Macquarie University's North Ryde campus is set on 126 hectares of parkland, 15 kilometres north-west of Sydney's central business district. The campus lies in the heart of one of the Southern Hemisphere's largest business and technology precincts, offering unique opportunities for internships and industry connections with giants like Microsoft and Sony.

Courses are also available at the Macquarie City Campus in Sydney's city centre and Transnational (offshore) and Distance programs make it possible to study Macquarie degrees outside of Australia at partner institutions or online.

North Ryde campus facilities

AU$1 billion has been invested in Macquarie's North Ryde campus to give its students and staff the very best facilities for learning and research.

The campus boasts a number of facilities not available at any other Australian university:

  • A new multi-million dollar library, featuring Australia's first robotic document retrieval system
  • The only private teaching hospital to be located on an Australian university campus
  • The first and only Australian university with its own train station, offering a direct rail link to the city centre
  • Some of the most advanced digital science laboratories in the Asia Pacific region
  • State-of-the-art media and creative arts facilities, housed in the former Australian Film, Television and Radio School.

Faculties also include a modern sport and aquatic centre, campus hub featuring a wide range of eateries and retail outlets, seven galleries and museums, two hotels and free wi-fi throughout the campus.

The Macquarie Centre, a major shopping complex, is on the doorstep of the campus and features a multiplex cinema, ice-skating rink, major department stores, supermarkets and more than 200 speciality retailers.

The campus also hosts a research park, featuring the global headquarters of Coholear Ltd. In 2012, the new Australian Hearing Hub will open in the research park, providing a world-class facility for research, education and services for hearing and speech disorders.

Preparing global graduates

Macquarie University students have access to a vast range of globally focused opportunities.

With one of the most extensive international exchange programs of any Australian university, students can choose to study at over 300 universities in more than 60 countries. Students can study overseas for periods ranging from a few weeks' vacation study to a full academic year.

Most importantly, Macquarie University helps support all eligible students financially when they travel so everyone has the opportunity to enhance their degree with international experience.

Building leadership skills

Macquarie University focuses on developing your capabilities, to give you skills for your career and your life. You will have many opportunities to build your leadership, communication and life skills through a range of unique programs such as the Global Leadership and Internship programs.

The PACE International (a Participation and Community Engagement Initiative) is jointly managed by Macquarie University and Australian Volunteers International. It provides opportunities for students to travel overseas, engage with developing communities and contribute to positive social change.

Building career skills

The Macquarie University Career Services provides the latest training and industry resources to maximise student employment both in Australia and overseas. The team offers workshops and personal consultations around career planning, interview skills and techniques and networking.

Scholarships

Macquarie University has one of the most generous scholarship programs in Australia.

The full-tuition Macquarie University International Scholarship (MUIS) rewards academic achievement and aims to attract outstanding undergraduate and postgraduate students from around the world to study at Macquarie University's North Ryde campus. In addition, the University also offers a number of partial scholarships ('MUIS Merit') for high achievers.

In total, over 100 scholarships are available every year through the MUIS and MUIS Merit programs.

Macquarie University also welcomes scholars from the Australian Government's Australia Award Development scholarship and Endeavour scholarship programs.

Accommodation

Macquarie University has a dedicated Accommodation Service that provides information on accommodation options, including temporary accommodation, university accommodation and private accommodation.

Airport reception

Free Sydney Airport pickup is provided by Macquarie's Accommodation Service for new international students with pre-arranged accommodation.

Temporary accommodation

The University can also help organise initial temporary accommodation, so that you have somewhere to stay when you first arrive if your long-term accommodation is not ready, or if you want to find accommodation after your arrive.

University accommodation

Long-term campus accommodation can be booked before or upon arrival in Sydney. All University accommodation complexes also have an onsite Resident Adviser, who oversees the logistics, arrival, departure and pastoral care of students.
