Brand new university campus

Queen Margaret University occupies a new campus development on the south-east side of Edinburgh, by Musselburgh. This vibrant academic village is supported by high-tech facilities and opened in 2007.

At the heart of the campus is an innovative learning resource centre (LRC), combining IT and library facilities. The campus also includes en-suite student residences, a student union building, indoor sports facilities and all weather surfaces, a variety of catering outlets, a shop and landscaped gardens with a range of environmental features.

Students benefit from a friendly campus environment, with easy access to all the attractions of Edinburgh city centre.

Courses

QMU offers a wide range of postgraduate and post-registration courses that can be studied full-time, part-time or by distance learning.

Postgraduate Courses

These are available to students who have a UK Honours degree, a degree and relevant experience, or an equivalent qualification. Studying for a postgraduate qualification can provide you with the skills to change career, to move into a different field, or help you bring together various disciplines.

In the case of part-time study, postgraduate courses can help develop areas of study relevant to the work in which you are currently engaged. A Masters level course normally takes one year to complete full-time, and up to three years part-time. A Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) course generally takes between six and nine months full-time, or about one to two years'' part-time.

Part-time and Distance Learning Courses

Many of our courses are designed for part-time study and some are available by distance learning. They generally lead to academic awards and/or professional qualifications.

Professional Registration

QMU provides a range of courses designed to fulfil the requirements of a number of professional and statutory bodies.

Research Degrees

Our increasing level of research activity, matched by increasing success in gaining external research funds, allows QMU to provide a wide range of areas in which students can register for research programmes leading to the awards of MPhil and PhD.

Masters degree programme

Masters Degrees:

• Modular in structure
• Flexible delivery formats
• Designed for your ongoing career and personal development
• Dissertation may be work-based
• Research and theoretical base
• Credit Accumulation and Transfer within the SCOTCAT framework
• Choice of optional modules from across the Masters framework.

All QMU postgraduate degrees are research-based. They help students develop the skills of analysis, problem-solving and critical thinking but are underpinned by a strong theoretical base. Specialist and broad-based programmes are also available.

• Professional Doctorate
• Master of Business Administration (MBA)
• Master of Science (MSc)
• Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)
• Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)

Structure

Programmes are modular in structure, with the majority of individual modules rated at 15 Masters (M) level academic credit points (or multiples thereof) and equivalent to 150 hours of full-time study.

Masters Degree

You will study the equivalent of 12 modules comprising:

• 4 or 5 core specialist subject modules;
• 2 research modules;
• 1 or 2 optional modules (depending on number of core specialist subject modules taken) and a dissertation or project equivalent to 4 modules, representing 600 hours of student work.

The dissertation or project subject can be based around your professional work if you are in employment. The registration period for the dissertation is up to two years.

Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip)

You will study the equivalent of 8 modules comprising:

• 4 or 5 core specialist subject modules;
• 1 research module and
• 2 or 3 optional modules (depending on number of core specialist subject modules taken).

Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert)

You will study 4 specialist modules.

Professional Doctorates

Professional Doctorates are higher degrees that aim to offer an academic experience to students where they can demonstrate high level knowledge and professional skills. Taught modules currently available through different named outcomes include:

• advancing professional practice;
• communications;
• research;
• consultancy;
• facilitation of learning in organisations;
• managing and facilitating change and
• the psychology of leadership coaching and decision making.

A thesis completes the doctoral studies.

Unlike a PhD, which requires the submission of a single thesis, a Professional Doctorate is awarded for a portfolio of professional work that includes evidence of accomplishment for each module undertaken as well as the thesis that is an integral part.

The Professional Doctorate can be achieved within three years on a full-time basis.

Research degrees

QMU awards several higher degrees by Research, Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and Master of Philosophy (MPhil), and Professional Doctorates to registered candidates who successfully complete approved programmes of supervised research.
