Introduction
Queen Mary is one of the largest multi-faculty colleges of the University of London and is located on attractive campuses at Mile End and Whitechapel in East London, West Smithfield at Charterhouse Square and Lincoln’s Inn Fields in central London. The College has over 15,000 students studying in three academic sectors: Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Engineering and Medicine and Dentistry. Over 2000 of these are postgraduate students on masters and research programmes. World class researchQueen Mary is one of the UK’s top research institutions; all of our academic staff are engaged in valuable research, pushing the boundaries of knowledge in their fields of expertise, as well as benefiting the students they will teach and supervise. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise confirmed Queen Mary’s position as a leading research institution. According to tables published in The Times Higher, Queen Mary was ranked 13th in the country with several departments and subjects being ranked 1st in the UK including Linguistics, Drama and Geography; the College came 2nd in Dentistry and English Language and Literature. Queen Mary was also in the top 10 for Hispanic Studies, Economics, Russian and Materials. InvestmentOver the last five years an extensive refurbishment programme of over £200 million has been invested in the campus ensuring that students enjoy world-class facilities. Recent developments include an award-winning 2000 bed Student Village on the Mile End campus and a £44 million building (Blizard building) housing the Institute of Cell and Molecular Science in Whitechapel. A budget of £682,000 has been allocated for upgrading the College library and £5.7 million has been invested in teaching facilities over the last 4 years The Mile End campus is also home to outstanding academic facilities including the Victorian Queens' Building, the modern award-winning Lock-keeper's cottage Graduate Centre for the Humanities and Social Sciences, The Informatics Teaching Laboratory, a striking new Learning Resource Centre and state-of-the-art laboratories. Our postgraduate law students benefit from the Centre for Commerical Law studies new teaching faculty at Lincoln's Inn Fields, right in the heart of legal London. As a Queen Mary student you will automatically become a member of the Students' Union (QMSU). Queen Mary's Students' Union is one of the most active in the University of London and forms an integral part of College life. The Union runs over 100 sporting and social clubs from mountaineering and politics and has 4 sports venues, which members can use for football, cricket, hockey, netball and rowing. A brand new multi million pound Health and Fitness Centre, QMotion, has recently opened which enables students to enjoy good value, high quality gym facilities on campus. Drapers which is the main bar on campus has recently undergone a £650,000 refurbishment.
International studentsQueen Mary has a real cosmopolitan community with students from all over the world contributing to the academic and social life of the College. We offer a range of support services to make our international students feel at home, including a free airport collection service before the start of term and an extensive welcome programme to give students the opportunity to meet other international students and gain practical advice about living and studying in London. We offer a range of scholarships to international students to reward outstanding academic achievement. For 2010-11 there will be a number of scholarships available for international students, in many subjects, including Biological Sciences, Computer Science, Economics, Electronic Engineering, Engineering, Law and Materials. Students have access to both the College's modern library, which holds over 600,000 volumes and to the collections of the University of London library. All students have free e-mail and Internet access and the student-to-computer ratios is one of the highest in Britain. Workstations can be found throughout the departments of the College. The Advice and Counselling Service and on-campus Health Centre offer a range of advice and support services to all students. Student LifeQueen Mary's Students' Union is one of the most active unions in the University of London and forms an important part of college life. It provides shops, cafes and bars, one of which was recently voted the best Student Union club venue in London. The Union runs over 60 sporting and social clubs. The union has four sports venues, where members can take part in sports such as football, cricket, hockey, netball and rowing. The Mile End campus has a multi-gym with the latest weight training equipment, squash courts and a sports hall.
International StudentsQueen Mary has a cosmopolitan community, with students from all over the world making a valuable contribution to academic and social life. A two-day orientation programme is provided for all new international students before the start of term in late September. This is an opportunity to meet other international students, follow a variety of courses and gain practical advice about studying and living in London. For 2006-7, there will be a number of scholarships available for international students, in many subjects, including Business Management, Computer Science, Electronic Engineering, Materials, Biological Sciences, Engineering and more. Fees and FundingTuition fees for home postgraduate students for 2011-12 will be £5,500 for taught programmes and £3,828 for research programmes. For international students, the fees for taught courses will range from £12,000 to £13,925 and for research programmes, they will be £11,740 and £14,555.
