LocationGlasgow is Scotland's largest city, with a population of 600,000. The main campus is located in the cosmopolitan West End of Glasgow, just under two miles from the vibrant city centre. Glasgow is the highest ranking UK city for personal safety, according to the worldwide Mercer Quality of Living Survey 2011. Glasgow's reputation for friendliness means that wherever you come from, it's easy to treat the city as your second home. The University combines the benefits and security of a campus-style environment with close proximity to vibrant city life offering a legendary live music scene, countless international festivals and the best shopping in the UK outside London. If you are familiar with Glasgow, you will already be aware that sport is an integral party of city life. In 2014, Glasgow will host the 2014 Commonwealth Games. Glasgow's location also makes it a good starting point for exploring the rest of Scotland and further afield. Scotland's stunning landscapes and coastlines can easily be accessed via public transport with popular Loch Lomond just 20 minutes' drive away. Innovative taught postgraduate programmesThe University of Glasgow's international reputation for research and teaching makes it a rewarding place for study. With over 300 taught postgraduate programmes, the University offers a wealth of studying opportunities. The University offers over 3,500 residential spaces and guarantees a place to all full-time new entrant home (conditions apply, see website) and international students studying for a degree, provided they apply by the 22 August deadline date. All accommodation is within easy access of the campus. There are also a wide range of accommodations available: you can choose from catered halls or self-catered flats, each consisting of mainly single bedrooms and a range of communal areas such as kitchens, libraries or study areas, TV rooms and laundry facilities. All rooms have internet access and some have a telephone point. FacilitiesThe libraryis one of the best academic libraries in Europe with over two million books, ranging from medieval manuscripts to the latest electronic databases. What's more the library is a perfect place to study as it is open 361 days of the year and almost 19 hours a day, from 7.15am to 2am. The University offers all students a wide range of computing facilities including email and internet access. The University provides first-class sporting facilities including a fully equipped gym, sauna and steam room, squash courts, swimming pool, games pitches, tennis courts, an athletics track and a cricket oval. Student lifeGlasgow is one of Europe's liveliest cities with a vibrant social scene. Students can join a range of clubs and societies, including the International Society. Unusually, the University of Glasgow has two Students' Unions on-campus: Glasgow University Union and Queen Margaret Union. Both have study rooms, cafeterias and bars, and they regularly hold concerts, club nights and comedy performances. Support for studentsEvery undergraduate student is allocated an Adviser of Studies who helps students with academic decisions. Every postgraduate student has a supervisor or tutor. The Students' Representative Council is an elected student body to represent student interests at the University. It also provides a variety of student services. International studentsThe University also has long tradition of welcoming students from all over the world. Glasgow's International Students Welcome Programme and Orientation Programme offers valuable support to students travelling to the city for the first time. Information for International Students The International Student Support team provide a dedicated advisory service for international students on non-academic matters such as immigration, employment, finance and any other concerns. International Student Support also run a series of social events for international students and their families throughout the year. A popular service used by International students who bring their families with them is the International Family Network which runs a variety of activities and events, and provides information about student and family visas, schooling and childcare, what to do in Glasgow and lots more.
