University of Hull

Established in 1927 as a college of the University of London, the University of Hull became an independent university in 1954, making it the 14th oldest university in the country. The University continues to grow, and the 21st century has already witnessed major expansion and investment in infrastructure, facilities and staff. Today, we are a respected, traditional university with more than 22,000 students.

We offer a variety of stimulating and challenging courses – with the newest disciplines alongside the more established fields, as well as multidisciplinary options. Hull is one of the UK's finest teaching universities. The Guardian and Sunday Times put us in the north of England's top five universities for teaching quality.

Facilities and services

The Brynmor Jones Library, at the centre of the Hull campus, houses more than a million books, supplemented by extensive CD, DVD and microfiche/microfilm collections and comprehensive electronic resources. We are also home to the region's largest collection of sheetmaps and, in the Hull History Centre, you can access archives, manuscripts and other material for local studies. The Scarborough Campus also has its own library – the newly refurbished and extended Keith Donaldson Library.

As well as 300 computers in the Brynmore Jones Library, there are almost 1,000 more around the Hull Campus, most of which are in open-access clusters available for any student to use. Large areas of the Hull Campus are wireless-enabled – so you can connect your own laptop or mobile phone to the internet – and, best of all, access is free. All of the University's student houses and all study bedrooms in the halls of residence have a high speed network connection.

Our Language Institute houses one of the largest and best-equipped language learning centres in Britain.

Student life

The University of Hull is well known for being welcoming and supportive and we have twice been named 'Britain's friendliest university' in independent surveys. Our students have voted us into the top ten universities in the country for student satisfaction in six out of the seven annual National Student Surveys carried out so far. Both the Sunday Times and The Guardian have named us one of the top five Northern universities for student satisfaction.

Situated in a leafy residential suburb just two miles from the city centre, our Hull Campus is one of the most attractive academic sites in the country.

The city and the region

Kingston upon Hull has it all – café culture, great shopping, vibrant nightlife, a sparkling marina, premier-division sport, theatres, a historic Old Town, galleries and museums. A revitalised city, Hull defies most visitors' preconceptions. As one of England's 10 largest cities, Hull regularly attracts the best in entertainment, with top bands, theatre and west end shows.

Away from the bustle of the city, the area is peppered with picturesque villages, stately homes and charming market towns. A little further afield are award-winning seaside resorts, the region's Heritage Coast offers panoramic seascapes, and the gently rolling Yorkshire Wolds appeal to walkers and cyclists alike.

The Students' Union

The students' union building is the hub of social activity, providing a wide range of exciting sporting, cultural and social activities. The union has more than 100 societies and 45 sports clubs and we are particularly proud of our on-site Sports and Fitness Centre.

The union building has a shop, lounges, bars and food outlets. In fact, the 2011 Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey scored us in the UK's top ten for the quality of our on-campus shops, bars and amenities. Our £3.6m superclub, Asylum, recently achieved an NUSSL Best Bar None Gold Award as one of the safest student venues in the UK. The 2,500-capacity club has hosted acts such as Tinie Tempah, N-Dubz, Chase & Status, The Streets and Kasabian.

Accommodation

Your money will go a lot further here than many other British cities. Housing costs and rents are among the lowest in the country.

We have some 1,200 residential places on campus or on the adjoining streets, and another 2,000 or so less than a mile away. We provide a wide variety of student residences, from traditional-style halls with meals and self-catered halls and student houses, to University-managed or privately-owned houses and flats. Most of our halls are in Cottingham, a busy village two miles from the University with excellent transport links to the campus.

The seven Lawns Halls stand in 40 acres of landscaped parkland within 10 minutes' walk of the centre of Cottingham. The Lawns complex is, in effect, a separate student village. The Lawns Centre, the focal point of the site, includes a refectory, late-night snack bar, TV lounge, billiards room, bars, area for discos and computer studio.

Most single first-year students starting full-time undergraduate degrees, as well as exchange, medical, nursing and midwifery students, are guaranteed places in accommodation owned, managed or directed by the University.

The Scarborough Campus

With two sandy beaches, bustling harbourside cafes, bars, a castle, theatres, museums and a funfair, towering cliffs, rocky shores and sandy beaches, Scarborough is a special place to live, learn and play.

Scarborough provides its student community with a vibrant campus, reasonable living costs and high quality, affordable accommodation. The new students' union area provides a shop, various advice centres and numerous societies and sporting activities.

Great career prospects

At the end of their studies, our graduates emerge with a highly regarded qualification. The latest statistics show that 93% of our students enter employment or further study within six months of graduation and, of those gaining employment, an impressive 73% secured graduate level jobs.

Getting in touch

The best way to find out about any university is to visit it. We hold open days each year but, for anyone unable to attend the open days, we may be able to arrange other individual or group visits during the year.
