Our FacultiesThe Portsmouth Business School is a full service school offering degree awards and executive education across accounting, finance, law, business and management disciplines - most of which have been accredited by their respective professional bodies. The courses range from part-time work-based Foundation Degrees to postgraduate programmes including its AMBA accredited Master of Business Administration. The Portsmouth Business School is recognised as a Centre of Research Excellence by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development. It has close involvement with both public and private sector organisations and an impressive reputation for research and academic excellence.
The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences incorporates the Institute of Criminal Justice Studies, the School of Education and Continuing Studies, the School of Languages and Area Studies and the School of Social, Historical and Literary Studies. The Faculty of Science has a longstanding and well-deserved reputation for excellence in both research and teaching. The Faculty offers programmes in Geography, Geology and Earth Sciences, Health Sciences and Social Work, Psychology and Sports Science. The Faculty of Technology has an established and well-deserved reputation for excellence in teaching, research, development and knowledge transfer. Student SatisfactionIn the 2012 Postgraduate Taught Experience Survey an average of 90% of respondents reported that their course at the University of Portsmouth had met or exceeded expectations. Further to this, an average of 91% of respondents reported that the learning resources on their course had met or exceeded expectations and an average of 87% of respondents would recommend their course to a relative or friend. Additionally, an average of 78% of respondents reported that they considered their masters course had improved their employment prospects. ResearchWe have a dynamic population of over 400 research students, including many international students, who form an essential and valued part of the of the Universitys research culture. People decide to study for a research degree for many reasons and at different points in their lives. Our research student community is wide ranging, embracing recent graduates, experienced academics and professionals along with people who may be returning to education after a break of many years. The idea of starting a research degree with all it encompasses can be daunting and our new Graduate School is here to guide you through the necessary steps to becoming a postgraduate research student. They include the Academic Skills Unit (ASK), Additional Support and Disability Advice Centre (ASDAC) and our Counselling and Chaplaincy service. Alongside this is the University Library. At the centre of academic life, the Library provides information in a variety of forms to help you with your study and research. The library is conveniently situated right in the centre of campus and is open from 8am until midnight every day during term time. A team of subject specialist librarians and other trained staff provides a wide range of services to support your information needs and help you make the most of the resources available. Our active Students Union and Sport and Recreation Department offer membership to sports societies and interest clubs, as well as three sports centres, housing two sports halls, squash courts, two dance/martial arts studios, a synthetic turf pitch, netball courts and grass pitches for football, rugby and lacrosse. We have a 100-station gym with a CV room, resistance zone and free weights room.
