Customer account manager
Lucy graduated with a degree in PR and communications and believes that graduates shouldn't panic if they're not 100% sure of what to do after university
How did you get your job?
After I finished university I moved back to Worcester and I went help out at Fire Label for a day. I was temping with the company and really enjoyed it.
The temp position got extended, then they asked me to apply for a permanent position. I was very lucky to be in the right place at the right time.
How relevant is your degree to your job?
I'd say it's been a very useful grounding for what I do now. When I was at university, I really liked the customer relations element and the media side of the degree, both of which are helpful in my current role.
What do you do day-to-day?
The job is all about customer service and customer relations. I manage accounts and work with clients to make sure they're happy with the service. I provide good customer service and make sure that clients get their orders.
I get in contact with them and talk over email and phone to establish how we can help them. Then I create a quote and see their order through from beginning to end.
How has your role developed?
I'm really happy as an account manager because the role is always developing. I also have commission and bonus elements to my pay, so as I build up my bank of clients I'm getting to know how I can help them more, which is brilliant.
What are the hardest parts of your job?
Dealing with customers who are not satisfied. We get training on how to handle those sorts of problems and you do learn an awful lot from the rest of the team.
We're very tight as a team and that really helps as a learning process too. Fortunately, it doesn't happen very often.
What do you enjoy about working in the sales sector?
I absolutely love working with the customers, the great thing is that we deal with such a range of people; you never know who you'll be on the phone to next. My clients have included Made In Chelsea and Macklemore and then some really small businesses.
I love that it really teaches you a lot about how to deal with all kinds of people from all walks of life.
Plus we have a beer fridge on a Friday.
Any advice for others wanting to do this job?
I'm always glad that I went to university because it made me more confident.
To anyone else about to graduate I'd simply say, don't panic. I know a lot of graduates have a job sorted after university, but don't worry too much if you don't.
Be prepared to do whatever it takes to get into a company, such as temping or volunteering, all of these routes can open up so many doors.
