How did you get your job?
After submitting my final university assignment I started the job search. I used career services such as Prospects and Indeed, as well as the Guardian and local newspapers.
It was during this search that I came across the National Skills Academy Graduate Scheme.
How relevant is your degree to your job?
My subject of study, language and linguistics, was not directly relevant to a career in adult social care.
However as a graduate I could evidence reading, writing and problem-solving skills as well as commitment and motivation.
What do you do day-to-day?
On a typical day I arrive at the office around 8am, check my emails and follow up on any tasks. I might raise any repairs that have been identified overnight or on the previous day.
I have a quality assurance role at the extra care schemes, so I will use the organisation's quality tool to look at the compliance of customer support plans and home files. I may identify files that need improvements, update the customer pen portraits and meet with the customer and their family to review their support plan. I will put together an action plan going forward with recommendations.
I may support the care workers when they bring residents down to the restaurant at lunchtime and have a chat with residents about their day. I will also answer phone calls from health and social care professionals, residents and family members and other stakeholders in the organisation.
How has your role developed and what are your career ambitions?
At the beginning of my traineeship I did a lot of training, shadowing and observations. Seven months into my traineeship, I have far more responsibility and have led my own projects.
Moreover, I aspire to someday become a registered manager of an extra care scheme.
The registered manager is arguably the most difficult and demanding role within the organisation, however it is also incredibly rewarding to provide care and shelter to vulnerable adults and to work within a team that has 'care, integrity, individuality, improvement, empowerment, investment and ambition' at its core.
What are the highlights and challenges of your job?
I enjoy working to support people to live a more independent, healthy and fulfilling life and to make a real difference. I like working within a team that is compassionate and caring.
The most challenging part of the job is the diversity of the role and how demanding it can be.
What are the best things about working in this sector?
The range of opportunities and roles on offer; from registered manager to commissioning, business development and strategic roles to policy officers.
Any advice for a graduates looking to work in social care?
My advice to other graduates would be to get as much voluntary and work experience as possible in adult social care, whether that be in the voluntary, public or private sector. This will help you to understand whether this is the right career path for you and will give you the life experience and skills that employers are looking for.
