Sophie is doing an MA in Modern History at The University of Sheffield. Discover why she chose this particular course
Why did you choose this course and institution?
I did my undergraduate degree at Sheffield and really enjoyed the experience, making it an easy choice. I found the department really supportive and quick to offer advice. I was also impressed by other aspects of the university, particularly the students' union.
Tell us about the course...
I've found the optional modules most exciting - it was difficult to choose mine as there were so many interesting options. I enjoy the depth these offer and the chance to analyse primary sources.
What are the benefits of postgraduate study?
What I enjoy most is the freedom. I'm currently writing essays on three topics and have been able to develop ideas and themes in a way that interests me. The course allows you to control your own time and work in a way that suits you.
What advice would you give to others considering postgraduate study?
I would highly recommend postgraduate study to anyone who really enjoyed their undergraduate degree or has a passion for research and learning. It involves a lot of reading and personal study, which can make it difficult.
However, you have more influence over what you are reading and studying, making the workload more enjoyable. There are lots of different topics on offer and, as long as the idea of reading heavily on areas that interest you and thinking critically sounds appealing, I would fully recommend a Masters.
