Marketing coordinator — Harriet Grace Goodacre

Harriet enjoys the creative side to her job as a marketing coordinator. Find out how she uses her degree in her role

How did you get your job?

I completed a couple of internships in Leicester and London and then started working full time for a luxury maternity apparel brand. It was a very small company but it was excellent experience as I got to be very hands-on with every aspect of the business, from project management to wholesale and web design, on top of my regular marketing duties.

From there I moved to Topps Tiles to focus on product photography and styling shoots, which has allowed me to explore interior design as well as fashion.

Do plenty of internships in different areas relating to your course to find out what you love and what you’re best at

How relevant is your degree to your job?

My fashion marketing and communication degree gave me a good grounding in styling and design movements, as well as general marketing theory and fundamental PR practices.

At university I was given basic training in Photoshop and InDesign, which I've since progressed to an amateur-design level and I use these skills to help create visual briefs for our creative agencies. Also the basic principles of marketing are applied on a daily basis.

Most importantly for me, it has given me a trained eye for styling and what works together, either on a photography set or a page layout in our latest marketing literature.

What are your daily activities?

Every day is fairly varied, I can be talking to buyers about new products and styling up to 35 shots for our new brochure; the next day I could be proof-reading the brochure and press releases or designing the latest inspirational look-book for new in-store initiatives.

What do you enjoy about your job?

I enjoy the creative side - designing, styling and reading up on the latest trends, whether in interiors or fashion. There's always a big stack of magazines on my desk.

What are the most challenging parts?

Communicating with different commercial departments. Creating the product imagery is the beginning of a products life as it stems throughout the business so we have to get it right and everyone needs to be happy with the final result.

Where do you hope to be in five years?

I would definitely love to be back in the fashion world or project managing for a creative agency.

What advice would you give to others who would like to get into this career?

Read around your course, it will really add value to the work you produce and give you a greater understanding of your subject outside of the confines of university.

I would greatly advise doing plenty of internships in different areas relating to your course to find out what you love and what you're best at, that way it's not too late if you decide on a different route in life.
