MSc Broadband and Mobile Communication Networks — Srijittra Swaisaenyakorn

Srijittra took a postgraduate degree at the University of Kent to improve her knowledge of the telecommunications sector

Why did you decide to pursue a postgraduate course?

While I was working in the mobile telecommunications sector in Thailand I enjoyed delivering technical training to colleagues and customers. This made me realise that I would like to pursue further study to know more about the area and give me the opportunity to become a lecturer in the future.

Why did you choose this postgraduate course and university?

I chose the University of Kent because the curriculum sounded interesting. The course offered a good mix of theoretical knowledge and practical experience through project work in broadband and mobile communications. I was based at the Canterbury campus, which as well as being close to London is one of the safest UK cities.

What is the course teaching you that your first degree did not?

It offers real industry knowledge with lectures by distinguished guest speakers from various companies and universities. Attending these and having the chance to talk to the speakers allowed me to understand more about the real world demand for mobile telecommunication and to come up with some ideas for research in the field.

Tell us about the course…

The course offers up-to-date telecommunications knowledge. All modules involve practical experience and theory that has supported assignments and some related lab experiments. This is very useful to help students understand how to apply theoretical knowledge to real life.

My Masters project was 'Diversity Assessment of Wearable Button Antenna' looking at improving the performance of body-centric channels using diversity techniques. Body-centric communication means any communication where at least one of the devices is in or on a human body. Diversity technique is when more than one antenna is used to either transmit or receive a signal in order to enhance the performance of the communication.

The project involved using software to design antennas and predict the channel's behaviour, fabricating antennas and experimental work using Vector Network Analyser to compare with predicted results. This allowed me to learn many skills throughout the project, with great support from my supervisor, PhD students in the same field and the technical staff at the School of Engineering and Digital Arts.

What areas of work could you go into as a result of your further study?

I could look for any job in mobile communications, fibre optics, and broadband networks. The course also provided me with fundamental skills needed for research work at PhD level.
