Responsibility? You bet. Right from the start, you’ll be involved in interesting challenging projects which make a real difference to our successful engineering insurance and inspection business. You’ll specialise to become an underwriter.
What is an underwriter? Which risks are worth to be taken for the business? At what price and under what conditions? These are decisions you’ll make, after carefully assessing individual companies and negotiating terms and prices with brokers. Sounds a bit complicated? Don’t worry, our two-year engineering Insurance scheme is designed to give you all the skills and technical know-how you need to become a successful underwriter and technical specialist of the future. We want you to get the opportunity to develop into a sector expert underwriter that works alongside our experts, helping to develop our underwriting and pricing strategy across a variety of lines of business, such as the construction, engineering and power sectors. As a specialist engineering insurer we have a large and varied customer base, so you could be assessing risks for construction projects, or machinery equipment or even looking at emerging risks such as cyber or renewable energy.
What you’ll be doing
You’ll gain a huge breadth of experience and will spend time moving around our business areas, such as:
Engineering Account team - where you can get involved in a variety of activities including pricing and portfolio management
Engineering Standards - where you can work with our specialist engineers supporting our large inspection business
Claims - where you can use your technical knowledge to help support our customers and claims handlers in assessing and settling claims.
You’ll work alongside our technical specialists within different business areas, helping to develop our underwriting and pricing strategy across a variety of lines of business, such as the construction, engineering and power sectors. You’ll work on new product design to make sure we meet the changing needs of our customers and be involved in working with some of our trading partners to help ensure Allianz delivers excellent customer service and maintains strong business relationships. You’ll use your excellent analytical and mathematical skills to evaluate risks to support the development of these key strategies, helping to ensure we continue to grow our business profitably. Based in Liphook, you’ll need flexibility to spend time in our branch offices where required.
Underwriting is at the heart of any insurance company, so developing your skills in this core area opens the door to a whole range of opportunities. These could include Senior Underwriter, Technical Management, Pricing or Account Management – all with the potential to develop into senior leadership roles. Equally you could pursue a career in Risk Surveying, Sales or Operations. The opportunities are as varied and broad as the business and your aspirations.
Support, training and progress
Allianz has a strong reputation for supporting students in their studies. You’ll be assigned dedicated study days and the funding you need to successfully complete the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Advanced Diploma in Insurance (ACII). In addition to your CII qualification you’ll also complete Allianz’s market-leading underwriting academy. Once you’ve qualified you’ll have the opportunity to attend development programmes with your peers, as well as opportunities to meet and learn from colleagues across the Allianz Group.
You’ll have direct access to our buddying and mentoring schemes, which are a great way to make connections throughout the business and to learn more about our work. In addition, you’ll have opportunities to visit our key stakeholders and we’ll also put you in touch with other Allianz graduates, so that you can share your experiences with your peers and build a network of connections with other business managers of tomorrow.
