Case study

Katie Sullivan — Allianz Management Trainee (AMT)

Allianz Insurance plc

What course did you study and where?

I studied a four-year degree in Business and Sociology with a year in industry at Aston University, Birmingham. I spent my year in industry working as a management trainee at Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

How did you get your job?

I found out about Allianz through a third party marketing site much like Prospects. I was attracted to the variety that the Allianz Management Scheme offers as I wasn’t too sure what exactly I wanted to do. The Allianz graduate scheme allows me to rotate around 4 different departments in the business which gives me exposure to all aspects of Allianz. The recruitment process consists of an initial application form, online testing, a video interview and an assessment centre.

What’s a typical day like as an Allianz Management Trainee?

My day varies from day to day depending on which project I am looking at, however, I do try and vary my day so that I'm not spending all day looking at one project. Some days I spend out of the office with the business developers meeting with clients, other days I spend racking my brains over excel spreadsheets and some days I spend making PowerPoint presentations. I like the variety that this role allows and I can fill my day however I wish to as long as deadlines are met.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I currently work in the sales and distribution team at Allianz Legal Protection and this allows me to get involved in a whole host of different activities. I enjoy the variety of my role the most and the fact that you feel like you’re actually making an impact to the business.

What are the challenges?

The biggest challenge for me is that when rotating placement you have to start all over again as if it’s the first day. However, you soon get used to this and everyone has been very welcoming so this makes it a little easier.

In what way is your degree relevant?

The biggest part of university that prepared me for my current job was probably my placement year. Although your degree gives you the knowledge you need my year in industry taught me about the real working world.

How has your role developed and what are your career ambitions?

The AMT scheme allows you to rotate around different departments, so I have spent 9 months in commercial underwriting and I am now doing my sales and marketing placement at Allianz Legal Protection. Following this 6 months I will move to do 6 months in claims and six months in operations. I have really enjoyed the marketing side of my role and therefore I’d like to explore career options in this field.

How do I get into Allianz?

If you don't know what area you'd like to work in then the Allianz Management Trainee Scheme could be one for you.

You'll have the opportunity to develop skills across four different area; underwriting, claims, sales and marketing and operation.

If the role interests you, apply, what’s the worst that can happen? When I applied I didn't know a huge amount about Allianz and the way they work but by doing the different stages of the application process you quickly learn what it would be like to work for them.

Allianz are not only looking for good academics but they’re also looking for personality during the interview process and therefore make sure to be yourself.
