Marine Safety Engineering Summer Placement (Plymouth)

Job description

Get an incredible summer experience or immerse yourself in our world for a year. It’s not just graduates who get to experience the extraordinary things we do at Babcock. These 10 to 12-week internships over the summer holiday give you the opportunity to try out a discipline and see if it’s something you want to do once you graduate.

What you'll be doing
As part of the Marine sector, our 5,500-strong business based out of Plymouth is a strategic partner of the MOD and the Royal Navy. We undertake 100% of submarine refits as well as 75% of UK surface fleet refits and 50% of fleet maintenance work. As a result, we’re looking to recruit talented, enthusiastic and driven people to join our team.

You could be based in one of our design, safety or facility management offices working with the teams who maintain the facilities at Devonport, Plymouth to support the MOD and Royal Navy requirements.

What you'll get out of it
You’ll be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes Health Physicists, Engineers and Human Factors specialists working together to ensure that our operations remain safe. You’ll spend 12 weeks learning about the role Safety Engineering has to play in our company in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of projects and the maintenance of our infrastructure.

You’ll have to get your head around a lot of different factors to spot where the weaknesses might lie. So, you’ll be learning about everything from production and manufacturing, to project management, design and safety. You'll also be part of a multidisciplinary team that includes health physicists, engineers and human factors specialists working together to ensure that our operations remain safe. You may be working on projects within the commercial marine sector or refits for submarines or warships for the Royal Navy. You’ll train to become a Safety Engineer, helping us identify and control any possible threats to our people and the environment.

What we are looking for

You’ll need to be studying for a science, engineering or maths degree. Successful candidates will also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment).

Accepted degree subjects
