Mechanical engineering is not one area, but many. Over the course of two to four years, you’ll get to experience the breadth of our work. You might be tackling submarine design projects or warship refits. Equally, you might be working in oil and gas, rail network renewal or nuclear programmes. The possibilities are incredibly varied.
Where you can join us
Places on our Mechanical Engineering graduate programme for Autumn 2018 are available within our Marine (Bristol or Leicester), Marine (Clyde), marine (Plymouth or Keynsham [Bristol]), marine (Rosyth), land and nuclear sectors. But no matter which team you join, you could be based anywhere in the UK. That’s why we ask all our graduates to be flexible and willing to move during their programme.
What you'll be doing
You could work in mechanical design: producing drawings and working with manufacturers, suppliers and subcontractors right through to manufacture, installation and decommissioning. Equally, you could work on analysis and problem-solving for existing equipment or systems. There will be plenty of onsite work (e.g. implementing designs, finding solutions to installation issues, liaising with designers and office-based engineers). You’ll also get involved in project management too: engaging with stakeholders, planning delivery and ensuring projects run to budget and programme.
What you'll get out of it
You’ll get a proper overview of what we do, which will help you figure out what you love and what you’re good at. We’ll also support you every step of the way on your path to becoming an Incorporated or Chartered Engineer – with a competitive starting salary of £28k-£30k.*
*Depending on location, role and qualifications.
Qualifications and experience requirements
A 2:2 BEng (Hons) degree is vital. And because the programme is accredited by the IMechE, IET, RINA, IChemE and IMarEST, your degree will need to be accredited by one of those institutions too. You’ll also need to satisfy the MOD’s security requirements (and may need to complete a medical assessment).
