This role is within the Marine Sector of Babcock International Group, which delivers a wide array of complex through-life marine engineering services to defence and civil customers across the globe. These range from UK and international naval fleet support, commercial marine, engineering consultancy, weapons handling, equipment support, intelligence, cyber security and training.

Working across a range of exciting design, manufacture and support projects, Mission Systems employs approximately 1,600 people across the UK and overseas with the largest sites based in Bristol, Plymouth, Portsmouth and Ashchurch.
For more than a century, Babcock, the Aerospace and Defence Company, has been trusted to deliver bespoke, highly-skilled engineering services. We help customers in the UK and around the world to improve the capability, reliability and availability of their most critical assets within the four market sectors of Marine, Land, Aviation, and Nuclear, underpinned by a deep understanding of technology integration, unique infrastructure and specialist training.
Mechanical Engineer with Manufacturing Degree Apprenticeship
Over the six-year apprenticeship students will earn a BEng degree in Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing. This programme will offer the opportunity to gain extensive experience within our on-site production department as well as the design, analytical and wider business areas for which our graduate scheme is held in such high regard.
This programme gives you a broad exposure to our business, including experience in analysis, design, business winning and project management. There are also opportunities to undertake off-site placements at some of our other business units – something which we strongly encourage and support.
Possible placements
In your first year you will work in our onsite apprentice training workshop where you will gain your Performing Engineering Operations (PEO) qualifications and attend UCW who will deliver taught modules.
Year’s two to four will be spent completing placements across the business, with a particular focus on our production environment, where you will learn how we produce the high-quality complex assemblies for which Babcock Mission Systems is renowned. During this time, you will attend UWE on day release to complete your BEng degree.
In year five you will enter your ‘Responsible Position’ in an area of the business you want to specialise in.
Qualification you’ll get
- Performing Engineering Operations Units (Foundation Workshop Training)
- BEng Mechanical Engineering with Manufacturing Degree
Your technical training will be supplemented with in-house training courses and soft skill training to help you develop your personal and team working skills.
At the end of the programme apprentices will be at Engineer grade, identical to their peers who have attended university and completed our graduate scheme and working to become our future Lead Engineers and Design Managers within the business.

- A minimum of five GCSEs, all at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent) including maths, English and a science
- Three A-levels in maths, physics plus a third subject, at grade B or above or equivalent qualifications.
- The ability to gain SC clearance.
