Scientific Apprenticeship
This is an exciting opportunity for the right candidate to join us to be trained as a science apprentice. The apprenticeship is based at the Greeson Court facility located on Westlakes Science and Technology Park in Cumbria. The role will provide the successful applicant with the skills and knowledge to allow them to conduct a variety of scientific and technical activities within a radio-analytical laboratory environment.
Key responsibilities will require successful candidates to:
- Assist in the delivery of assigned programmes of work to support the overall delivery of analytical results to time and quality
- Comply with Environmental Laboratory quality management systems to support accreditation
- Comply with processes and procedures to enable safe working practices
- Work as part of an effective team to support and coach each other to provide a consistent and efficient level of service
- Identify and report issues to maintain and improve operational capability and level of service within area of responsibility
- Assist with the validation of new and existing techniques and equipment prior to use to comply with quality systems
- Take responsibility for personal continued professional development
- Comply with legislation and company policies and procedures to ensure appropriate standards are met
- Demonstrate an understanding and awareness of efficient operational practices to minimise wastage (financial and material)
Possible placements
Apprentices will work in a variety of labs across the site. The role involves conducting chemical and radiochemical analysis on a wide range of environmental samples: from sample preparation through to measurement and calculation of analytical results.
Apprentices also attend college to complete a nationally recognised Level 5 qualification.
What you’ll need
Candidates must have a minimum of five GCSE’s grade 9-4 (A*- C) including the following subjects:
- Maths
- English language
- Core science subject(s), ideally chemistry
Further education in a core science at level 3 or above is desirable.
Applicants should be aged 18 or older at the beginning of September 2023.
Apprentices without level 2 English and Maths will need to achieve this level before taking the end-point assessment.
The apprentice must demonstrate the core requirements below and also demonstrate the specialist requirements in their chosen role.
The ability to gain SC clearance.
