Environmental Engineer - Graduate Development Framework

Job description

Undertake a defined range of environmental engineering activities to support the Project Environmental Engineers, and the head of Environmental Engineering Governance, supplying research and support and/or to organise and co-ordinate aspects of environmental management and assessment activity ensuring defined objectives are achieved whilst continually maintaining quality and service requirements.

What you will be doing… (role duties and responsibilities)
As an Environmental Engineer you’ll look at projects from an environmental compliance and sustainability point of view, applying an environmental management system. Whereas other engineers focus on delivering capability, you’ll be concerned with how this capability impacts on the environment through the life of the product.

There will be relevant legislation, which we aim to comply with even when defence equipment is exempted. There will be direct and indirect environmental impacts, both steady state from operation such as energy and materials use, and then the avoidable risks from say accidental discharges and potential harm to biodiversity. Climate change will impact upon our products through their long service life, and we try to design a more resilient product to address this, and customer concerns such as energy security. We also need to consider materials, which may be harmful to the environment, legislatively restricted or where continued supply cannot be guaranteed.

You’ll liaise with engineers, supply chain, regulators and operations, and so will often be viewed as a trans functional engineer. You will also liaise with industry working groups on topics such as Design for Environment and REACH. In supporting the Head of Environmental Engineering, you will be exposed to the other activities undertaken at a BAE Systems level, and liaise with other business units manufacturing combat systems, aircraft, submarines, munitions and land systems

We expect great things from our graduates. In return, you can expect a generous salary with a comprehensive benefits and pension package, including 25 days’ annual holiday with flexible leave arrangements, senior mentoring, and product and service discounts.

What we are looking for

We’ll look for you to demonstrate exceptional problem solving and analytical skills and have the flexibility and resilience to thrive at BAE Systems

To apply, you’ll need to be on course for achieving a 2:2 bachelor’s degree. Anything with environmental, marine, geography or any science. There should be some sort of environmental modules involved.

Accepted degree subjects

  • environmental science and ecology
