Our Materials Engineers spend time formulating new materials for complex products.
BAE Systems is responsible for the design, manufacture and support of a wide range of munitions products. This requires us to formulate new materials, design features and functions and to ensure that we have manufacturing processes able to meet design tolerances and volume requirements on complex products.
We have a number of chemical processes and tests, as well as metal forming and treatment processes in use across three manufacturing sites. Our main materials are steel, aluminium and polymer systems.
As a Materials Engineer, you will be involved in a range of the above activities, typically including continuous improvement activity on a range of manufacturing processes and assessment of alternative materials for potential cost and/ or performance benefits. You could also be involved in the design and development of Munitions products and processes and the provision of technical support to manufacturing.
At BAE Systems, we provide some of the world’s most advanced, technology-led defence, aerospace and security solutions and employ a skilled workforce of some 83,100 people in over 40 countries. Working with customers and partners, we develop, engineer, manufacture and support products and systems to deliver military capability and national security solutions – helping to protect people and keep critical information and infrastructure secure. That’s work that matters and inspires us.
In terms of personal qualities, we look for people who are highly motivated and analytical. You’ll be able to see how the smallest detail affects the whole system and must be focused on quality, safety and reliability as these are the factors which give our products an advantage. Good communication skills are also essential, as you’ll be frequently working in multidisciplinary environments.
