Industrial Placement Programme

Job description

This is a 13 month programme designed for undergraduates with a placement year built into their course.

We’ve designed this programme to help talented people gain valuable work experience at the heart of the UK’s financial system.

First of all, we’ll introduce you to the different types of work we do. Then, you’ll work in a team, getting involved in our policy, research and operational work. You’ll also attend regular training and events with your fellow Industrial Placement colleagues.

If your performance is outstanding, we may consider you for a place on our Graduate Programme or Postgraduate Internship.

How could you develop?

If you are interested in this programme, we will ask you to choose from the following streams:

Operations

This is our generalist stream, and stream is open to students from all degree disciplines.

If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

  • Strategic Change and Operations
  • Authorisations, Regtech and International Supervision

Data

If you’re interested in data, this stream is for you. Our data scientists engage with audiences and demonstrate insights that make us more agile, innovative and effective. If you apply to this stream, you’ll need to complete an online Excel test as part of the assessment centre.

If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

  • Data Analytics Transformation
  • Payments
  • Prudential Policy
  • Supervisory Risk Specialists
  • Strategy, Risk and Operations

Economics

If you’re studying an economics or finance degree, this stream might be ideal for you. If you apply to this stream, you’ll need to complete an online Excel test as part of the assessment centre.

If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

  • Monetary Analysis
  • Centre for Central Banking Studies
  • Markets
  • Financial Market Infrastructure
  • Prudential Policy
  • Supervisory Risk Specialists
  • Independent Evaluation Office

Technology

If you’re interested in gaining hands-on experience working with our technical experts and getting involved in our projects, this stream could be for you. You don’t need a degree in computer science to apply.

You would work in our Technology division and your work could involve:

  • providing technology support to colleagues across our organisation
  • understanding their needs and suggesting technological solutions
  • developing and presenting reports on change projects

Supervision

This stream involves supervising financial institutions such as insurance companies, banks and building societies. This stream is open to students from all degree disciplines.

If you are successful, you could be allocated to one of the following areas:

  • Strategy, Risk and Operations
  • Authorisations, RegTech and International Supervision
  • UK Deposit Takers Supervision

What we offer you

In addition to your salary you will be enrolled on to the Bank of England pension scheme.

What we are looking for

  • Keen to learn about what we do and gain practical experience
  • Eager to gain a unique insight into the workings of the UK’s central Bank
  • Looking to build your network and find out more about graduate opportunities at the Bank
  • Studying any undergraduate degree that allows you to do a placement year (starting from next summer).
  • Expecting a 2.1 degree classification. You must not already have a degree. Specific degree requirements for Economist stream.
  • Achieved 120 UCAS points from 3 A-Levels (or equivalent).
