Samantha Smallwood — Graduate recruitment manager

Graduate recruitment manager Samantha Smallwood and operations manager Craig Chitty discuss how Capita IT Resourcing’s accredited IT skills and development programme, Novus, prepares graduates for a rewarding career

What do you look for in an employee?

At Capita IT Resourcing, our employees are at the heart of everything we do, and we know that our success is shaped by our most valuable resource – our people. We look for those with enthusiasm to succeed and the desire to contribute to the future of our vast and diverse organisation.

Along with a degree, candidates must also have excellent communication skills and an interest in IT. You’ll also need to have the passion to contribute to the world that Capita IT Resourcing helps shape on a daily basis.

How can a graduate stand out?

We pride ourselves on having a diverse workforce, knowing that everyone is an individual. This enables us to provide dynamic and varied solutions for our clients. So while we won’t ask you to change, candidates can certainly stand out by having some or all of the following: a great attitude, high enthusiasm towards all aspects of work, a suitable level of professionalism and strong attention to detail.

Furthermore, your hobbies and interests along with relevant work experience are also a plus for your application; we want to know who you are as an individual.

How is the Novus programme at Capita IT Resourcing structured?

Novus specialises in developing individuals as the next generation of IT professionals.

The programme begins with industry-accredited skills development in either our London or Manchester training academy, where you can gain relevant professional certifications. Upon successful completion of the training, you’ll be given the opportunity to embark on a rewarding journey and could be working in roles such as software developer, test analyst or business analyst representing Capita IT Resourcing on client sites across the UK.

The programme provides you with the best of both worlds – industry relevant professional training and certifications, followed by real-world experience working on projects that shape the world in which we live in.

What advice would you give to graduates wanting to work in the IT sector?

While a basic level of technical ability would be suitable, you certainly don’t have to be the next Bill Gates. One thing that we feel is crucial for working in the IT industry, however, is an interest and awareness of the technology used to shape our world. Staying up to date with the latest news and social media around IT is always a good place to start.
