Bring your most ambitious ideas to life
As one of our Senior Policy Advisers, you will be instrumental in using your life experience and skills to formulate innovative approaches to complex challenges. This is a role in which you do not specifically need previous policy experience within the civil service, as long as you have formulated policy ideas for other organisations facing equally complex challenges. Specifically, you will deliver astute policy advice to Ministers across DfT, and you will work in partnership with colleagues in the Cabinet Office, No10 and HM Treasury to share expertise on cross-departmental initiatives. Taking responsibility for projects that will support a designated policy area, you will compile and interpret evidence and communicate it fluently in writing or face-to-face. Handling Ministerial briefings and Parliamentary business, you will work in partnership with key sector experts and stakeholders to gather the information that you need. Making use of data plus social research and behavioural insights, you will seek credible information that will support decisions being made within the team.
Use your knowledge to support the creation of the UK’s most interesting projects
As you will be supporting senior managers in the creation and implementation of policies, you will bring a team-player approach to the role, underpinning this with excellent verbal and written communication skills. While experience in a civil service policy role would be useful, it is not strictly essential if you have transferable policy skills gained in a similarly complex role. Crucially you will be capable of aligning your work to wider organisational priorities and you will be keen to share knowledge and expertise with the wider organisation. With the capacity to interpret evidence and make sound judgements in a fast-paced environment, you will identify risks that could impact on the successful delivery of policies and come up with solutions.
A truly diverse and inclusive workplace
DfT is a Disability Confident employer. We are committed to ensuring an accessible workplace and that disabled staff have the adjustments needed to be effective. At DfT our commitment to inclusion goes both ways and we look for our people to value inclusion just as much as we do. The Government has committed to moving 22,000 Civil Service roles out of London by 2030 which will enable us to get closer to the communities that we serve. This is an initiative that we have already embraced at DfT, with the creation of new hubs in Leeds and Birmingham. We are confident that this development will improve our policy making capabilities even further, as we want to create a more diverse and inclusive team that connects people with the places that mean the most to them. This move underpins our commitment to access and progress talent from all backgrounds, and as such, we are immensely proud to have been listed by the Social Mobility Employer Index as one of the ‘Top 75 UK Employers’ in 2020.
