Going on a wide range of placements, you’ll learn on-the-job, get stuck into real-life engineering projects and set your sights on a management role and Chartered Engineer status,

At FirstGroup, we operate a number of UK rail franchises – placing graduates in Great Western Railway, TransPennine Express and South Western Railway. Together we run over 1,200 vehicles and transport more than 140 million rail passengers a year. So, where better to learn all about rail engineering?

As things move fast here, you’ll need to be able to think quickly on your feet and create innovative solutions to the different challenges that will come your way. On this IMechE aligned Rail Engineering Graduate Scheme (REGS) affiliated to the Rail Delivery Group, you’ll:

  • Inspect, diagnose and repair vehicles
  • Learn all about depot engineering management
  • Work on technical solutions and engineering design projects
  • Go on an industry placement with a supplier
  • Gain a good understanding of our business, UK Engineering Performance and project and contract management.

What we are looking for


As a talented graduate, you must think creatively, look at problems from every angle and always put safety first. With resilience, customer focus and confident communication, you should have at least a 2:2 IMechE or IET accredited BEng or MEng degree. You’ll also need the flexibility to move around the network, spending time working in our different UK depots.
