Gemma O'Leary of Fujitsu discusses how graduates on their scheme can develop key skills and get involved with numerous activities, as they enter the exciting and ever-changing world of IT

What do you look for in an employee?

At Fujitsu, we're looking for people who will bring their own personalities and skills to the role, those willing to learn and eager to push themselves. If you're unique and want to help us have a positive impact on society, then you're exactly the sort of person we're looking for.

We believe in the power of difference to create a better future in a digital and diverse world. We aim to create an environment where people can be themselves and feel able to contribute to the success of the company. If you're talented, enthusiastic, and keen to make a difference, you can succeed in our organisation. We respect people regardless of their background, ensuring equal opportunities for everyone.

How can a graduate stand out?

We want our graduates to shape our tomorrow, so we'll support you in delivering outstanding results. Additionally, we provide the opportunity for you to get involved in a number of exciting activities alongside your chosen role and recommend that you take these opportunities in order to stand out. For example, our graduates regularly work with our current charity partner Macmillan Cancer Support. Fujitsu's charity partnerships are part of the company's commitment to making a positive contribution to society and the communities it operates in.

How is the graduate programme at Fujitsu structured?

Alongside your chosen role and training, you'll also embark on a comprehensive 24-month modular development programme. These modules cover key skills such as self-awareness, leadership, business awareness and business knowledge. In addition to the development programme, you'll also be assigned a 'buddy', a graduate from the year above, as well as a professional mentor.

What advice would you give to graduates wanting to work in the IT sector?

IT is an exciting and ever-changing area, which offers fantastic opportunities to push the boundaries of digital technology, and at Fujitsu we see it as shaping the way we live our lives.

Our website is a great place to start researching the company and the services we provide, for example, the developments within cyber security and biometrics. We're the largest Japanese employer in the UK and a leader for offering a full range of technology products, solutions and services.

We'd recommend spending some time researching the types of roles available in IT to find out what interests you. A keen interest in technology is key, and you should also keep up to date with the latest changes and updates in the sector.
