Joanna Thomson, from Gist's graduate and apprentice recruitment and development team, explains what you can expect from the fast-paced world of supply chain and logistics
What do you look for in an employee?
We accept applications from students who've achieved, or are predicted to achieve, a minimum of a 2:2 Bachelors degree in any discipline. You'll also need to possess an A*-C in English language and maths at GCSE level (or equivalent).
You should be flexible location-wise for the duration of the operational graduate management trainee and operational management industrial placement schemes, as you could be based at any of our UK sites. You'll also need to hold a full UK driving licence by the start date of your scheme.

How are the graduate programmes structured?
Our two-year operational graduate management trainee scheme consists of two 12-month placements at different sites, offering exposure to our warehouse and transport departments.
For your first placement, you'll join us as a team manager within one of our large Marks & Spencer food warehouses, with responsibility for managing a team of up to 30 people. For your second placement, you'll work as a team manager within one of our operational sites, with additional senior management responsibilities.
Our IT graduate project management trainee scheme is designed to develop graduates into IT project managers. The majority of the scheme will be spent at our head office in Basingstoke, with plenty of exposure to our operational sites. To be successful in this role, an IT background isn't essential. We're looking for graduates to join us who possess strong organisational skills, a keen interest in technology and a willingness to work with a diverse team.
All of our graduates receive structured on-site and central training in people management and best operational practice, as well as regular performance reviews to ensure that they're receiving the right support and opportunities.
We also offer 12-month industrial placement schemes in HR, consulting and operational management, with the potential to be fast-tracked onto one of our graduate schemes.

The aim of our graduate schemes is to develop your management capabilities within a challenging environment; your flexibility and resilience are therefore paramount. Strong communication skills are also essential, as you'll need to build solid relationships to achieve the best results with your team.
