What does a Structural and Biophysical Sciences Industrial Placement have to offer?
Structural & Biophysical Sciences (SBS) is a part of the Medicinal Science & Technology directorate at GSK which focuses on early stage small molecule and antibody drug discovery. This department uses state-of-the-art technologies, such as X-ray crystallography , electron microscopy , hydrogen-deuterium exchange mass spectrometry and surface plasmon resonance , to support drug discovery efforts as part of therapeutic program teams. Our goal is to understand how small molecules and antibodies interact with disease causing proteins and help translate this knowledge to better design new medicines.
We are a diverse team of about a dozen people, ranging from experienced researchers with decades of drug discovery expertise, to early career scientists yet to complete their PhD/BSc studies. As individuals we enjoy a challenge, but also working as a team, as the complex questions we are asked to solve often require us to work closely together and with colleagues from other departments such as computational chemistry, medicinal chemistry and biology, to make real progress at speed.
We are seeking two enthusiastic students with an aptitude for problem solving, good attention to detail and a keen interest in biophysical and structural sciences to join our group for a year. The roles are primarily laboratory based although computational competence and experience in scientific software such as Excel, Graphpad, R, Coot, Pymol, etc is highly desirable.
