Working at Man Group — Employee insights

Man Group

The best way to find out what it’s like to work at a company is to hear from those who already work there. Here is what Man Group’s interns and employees think…

‘The best part of the internship was the accessibility of my colleagues, no matter how senior they were. Everyone in the team was more than willing to discuss any questions that I had whether they related to a task at hand or helping me learn new things. I came away from the internship having learned a good deal more than I thought I would simply because of these meetings with senior figures who were excited to share their experiences.’

‘For my investment internship at Man Group, I was placed in AHL, one of Man’s systematic investment engines. Starting without substantial programming experience was quite daunting but the only reaction to my initial lack of fluency in the methods and process was extreme understanding, mentorship and patience. At all times, I felt like my responsibilities grew in lockstep with my progress. Not only was I given challenging tasks but some of my outputs turned into pretty substantial decisions for the business. This is indicative of how much confidence and trust the people at Man put into the quality of their interns’ work. On top of that, the exposure I got to people within the different investment engines was helpful in forming a more nuanced view of the investing landscape. The internship is ideal for self-starting and intellectually curious students who want to gain the broadest possible sense of the dynamics of the investment management industry.

‘I thoroughly enjoyed my internship at Man GLG - the environment is intellectually stimulating and the high level of collaboration between diverse teams and strategies provides scope to learn something new each day. It was motivating to be given a high degree of responsibility and independence from the start, but also have access to regular guidance when required. I was especially pleased to be entrusted with and produce work that would add actual value to the business.’

‘The Man graduate programme is a two year course that offers diversified access into both discretionary and quantitative investments in the public and private markets. The relatively long length of rotations with respect to other graduate programmes allows the development of a good understanding of each of the four business units you rotate through, as well as access to different people across the firm.’

‘As a graduate analyst you are empowered to direct your own learning from the start, which teaches you valuable lessons about how to actually learn. This is a key advantage of the Man programme, as you periodically join a new team and begin learning again. The cumulative effect of constantly adapting is an impressive library of experience and knowledge that makes you both versatile and valuable, enabling you to have a clearer idea of what work you truly enjoy.’

‘This analyst programme is perfect for any graduates who would like to build a successful career in the asset management industry. I am impressed by the flexibility, strong support network; and wide yet deep exposure the programme provides. The flat structure and the collegiate atmosphere are so integral to Man Group’s culture that, as a graduate, you really can chat about your interests and career goals with some of the most senior members. The programme is a unique opportunity to gain an understanding across a range of asset classes and investing styles from the best in the industry.’

‘I’d say the graduate scheme is great as you get to build a network of familiar faces around the business and become a part of the fabric of the company. By rotating around the different business divisions you are able to work with and learn from a variety of different people that all provide their own insight and skills to help you develop. As a result you finish the scheme a well-rounded individual with a great network you can utilise for the rest of your career at the firm.’
