Job description

What is the Opportunity?

Our Sensors department works on projects that cover the full product lifecycle from research, through to early concept phase, to full product design and production programmes. The roles cover EletroOptic (EO), RF Systems, Datalink technologies and Navigation sensors with applications covering systems design work, hardware and firmware.

You will be able to perform technical investigations and provide problem assessments and design solutions within a culture of innovative thinking.

What will you be doing?

You will gain an in-depth knowledge of sensors and how they interact with other subsystems to form part of the wider missile system.

There are three different types of graduate schemes available should you have a preference please indicate this on your application form.

Electro-Optical (EO)

Develop expertise on infrared (IR), optical and laser-based sensors. You will gain an understanding in the following areas:

  • The design and build of optical prototypes and the corresponding testing and evaluation
  • Research and Development of novel EO techniques and solutions
  • Modelling and simulation of the environment, target and sensor
  • Performance evaluation and subsystem specification
  • Support to all MBDA UK systems that incorporate EO technology
  • Data capture using IR technology
  • Test and design of LASER based optical systems and Directed Energy Weapons (DEW)

RF Systems and Datalinks

You will gain an understanding in:

  • A variety of radio frequency sub-systems, including data communications; radars and radio altimeters, typically operating between 1 and 18GHz.
  • Specification and assessment of RF products to support development, production and in-service programmes via interaction with UK and European colleagues and suppliers.
  • Development, procurement, parameterisation, verification and/or validation of complex hardware performance models (e.g. Matlab, Simulink or similar)
  • Monitoring supplier and technology roadmaps and identifying cutting edge and future technologies for investment
  • Research and design activities in conjunction with French, Italian and/or German colleagues.

Navigation Sensors

Responsible for the specification and assessment of navigation sensors such as Global Navigation Satellite Systems (e.g. GPS) and inertial measurement units.

You will gain an understanding in:

  • GPS hardware trials, including GPS simulator receiver trials and anti-jam performance assessments carried out in the Navigation Sensors lab, at field trials and/or in anechoic chamber facilities
  • Performance evaluation, integration and sensor sub-system specification
  • Modelling and simulation of Navigation Sensors and relevant environments/threats
  • Electronic warfare evaluation and sub-system susceptibility
  • Development and management of cutting edge inertial measurement unit technologies.
  • Working closely with our international colleagues in MBDA France as well as industrial partners
  • Research and development into novel navigation sensor technologies, such as magnetometers and quantum navigation
