A Software Engineering Apprenticeship at our brand new manufacturing site in Bolton, working in an open plan working environment with state of the art manufacturing facility and laboratories aimed at aiding your learning and development.

You will study towards a Digital& Technology Solutions BSc (Hons) degree at Manchester Metropolitan University. You will do rotational placements for the remainder of the week. You will be exposed to a wealth of products across multiple projects. You will gain experience with a number of programming languages and a number of tools. You will be working with different development methodologies, a number of test strategies, varying lifecycles, and more; ensuring your time with Software Engineering is an engaging, enriching, and rewarding experience. You will develop the skills to effectively design, create, and test software.

Working closely with other teams and departments, you will work through a variety of stages in the software development process, covering anything from embedded systems to front end software. This software will be developed on a range of platforms, including Linux and Windows, utilising C/C++, Ada, and Java. You will also be ensuring the functional and technical robustness of deliverables, and be responsible for the creation and maintenance of documentation.

Other, non-technical responsibilities include:

  • Working with other departments
  • Understanding MBDA, your role, and how best to develop your career
  • Updating managers and your team with your progress and personal development
  • Participating in the Early Careers events along with other apprentices and graduates

As well as a variety of placements, you will have the opportunity to undertake developmental training and support:

  • An induction event that allows you the opportunity to interact with all ECP new-starters, and integrate into the business
  • Two, one-week residential courses to develop skills, such as team working, business communication, presentation and project management skills
  • Two-day career development workshop at the end of the scheme to assist you moving from an apprentice into the business
  • A breadth of experience and support is available which includes a buddy system to welcome you into MBDA, access to the mentoring scheme and regular informal meetings with other Early Careers Programme (ECP) members and managers
  • You will also get fantastic opportunities to bring your technical knowledge to schools as a STEM ambassador
  • Five days paid study days to prepare for exams per year

“I love my role as a Software engineer, it mixes logic with creativity. MBDA has helped me develop as a well-rounded individual, capable of taking on large scale projects rather than simply a coder.” Nicola - Software Apprentice.
