Software Engineer Apprenticeships

Still recruiting throughout COVID‑19

Job description

To create the next generation of technology, we need the next generation of thinkers.

At the UK Intelligence Agencies, we protect the UK from a range of threats, including terrorism and espionage. It’s fascinating work with real purpose, and it’s work we couldn’t do without our software engineers. But we understand that not everyone will have a software degree, because uni isn’t for everyone. Luckily, MI5, MI6 and GCHQ are. That’s where our degree apprenticeship comes in.

Over the course of three years, you’ll enjoy lots of unique, hands-on work that’ll challenge you every day. You’ll build and maintain some of the world’s most advanced software tech – all while working towards a BSc honours degree. And you’ll be surrounded by supportive, like-minded people. It’s the perfect way of starting your career after secondary school or college.

As part of a vital team you’ll collaborate with colleagues, building tech that catches criminals and keeping us ahead of an ever-evolving digital world. And, taking advantage of state-of-the-art facilities, you’ll also enjoy lots of technical training, classroom learning and job shadowing. It all means you’ll get practical insights into how we use tech to keep the UK safe. Plus, you’ll earn while you learn.

To join this BSc Honours degree apprenticeship, you’ll be fascinated by tech. You’ll also have (or be expecting) three A-Levels. Two of these need to be in a science, technology, engineering or maths (STEM) subject. One A-Level will need to be at grade C or above, while the other two will be at grade B or above. If you haven’t studied A-Levels, you’ll need equivalent qualifications in STEM subjects.

While an interest in programming would be great, we don’t expect you to have fully developed skills. Instead, you just need to be keen to learn. We’ll teach you the rest. While some of the apprenticeship places are based in London, there are also opportunities in Manchester.

The UK Intelligence Agencies MI5/ M16/ GCHQ are equal opportunities employers, committed to reflecting the society we protect. Our recruitment process is fair, transparent and based on merit. We particularly welcome applications from diverse and under-represented groups.

To be eligible to apply, you must be a British Citizen. One of your parents must be a British Citizen or must have one of the nationalities or citizenships from one of the following: British Overseas territory, British subject, British National (Overseas), British protected person, citizenship of the Commonwealth, EEA nationality, or citizenship of the United States of America. If deceased, have had such citizenship or nationality before death. If you hold dual nationality, of which one component is British, you will nonetheless be considered. If successful, you will not normally be required to give up your non-British citizenship but, as a condition of your employment or secondment, MI5 may impose restrictions on your postings, work travel and/or general use of that nationality. Candidates must normally have been resident in the UK for seven out of the last ten years. This is particularly important if you were born outside the UK. Each case will be carefully considered on its own facts. You can apply at the age of 17 years and six months, if successful you will not be offered a start date prior to your 18th birthday. Discretion is vital. You should not discuss your application, other than with your partner or a close family member. Please note, you should only launch your application from within the UK. If you are based overseas, you should wait until you visit the UK to launch an application. Applying from outside of the UK will impact on our ability to progress your application. Further information on our eligibility criteria can be found on the Applying section.
