Job description

This is a unique opportunity to improve your technical and analytical skills on an 11-week paid summer internship; you will be working on live projects which will help keep the UK safe.

Technology is at the heart of everything we do at MI5. You’ll be working with – and learning from – experienced and pioneering technical teams, often on projects you won’t find anywhere else. By the end of your internship, you’ll have had a direct and rewarding impact on how we use technology to protect the UK from serious security threats. You’ll be based in one of five technical areas:

  • Business analysis
  • Cyber technical analysis
  • Covert technical operations
  • Information architecture
  • Software engineering

Combining problem-solving skills with an aptitude for working with technology, you’ll be a confident communicator, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to different audiences. In some areas you’ll need basic coding skills, while in others your logical approach, interest in data flows, or knowledge of computer security or computer forensics will be more important. With basic computer skills, you’ll be comfortable working at a computer for long periods and handling a range of written, numerical, image-based and audio data.

The internship will run from the 25 June 2018 to 14 September 2018.

Person requirements

To work for MI5, you must have lived in the UK for nine out of the last ten years. We may still consider you if, during that time, you served overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of Her Majesty's Government, or if you studied abroad, or lived overseas with your parents. You must also be aged 18 or above and be a born or naturalised British citizen, with one parent who is a British citizen or who has substantial ties to the UK.

Qualifications and experience requirements

You must have, or will be expecting to receive at least a 2:2 degree or equivalent in a technology or wider STEM-related subject by autumn 2019. You should also be available to start permanent employment in autumn 2019. For the duration of the internship you must be able to live in or commute to central London.
