Statistical Officers

Job description

Can you tell a story with statistics? At the Ministry of Defence (MOD) you will use your fascination with facts and figures to influence all kinds of decisions.

As a key member of a highly creative team you will analyse a rewarding variety of issues. Uncovering the narrative behind MOD numbers, your work will underpin improvements ranging from the health of Armed Forces personnel, to commercial and financial decision making.

Working closely with all three forces, MOD civilian employees and the veterans population you will help all of us in the Defence Statistics organisation to provide trusted truths about the MOD’s performance. Together we deliver information, advice, research, forecasting and modelling that shapes the policies and plans which keep British citizens and people in need safe all around the world.

The work itself is hugely rewarding - but the whole package is designed to reflect the important contribution you make. We offer flexible working and 25 days annual leave, together with a host of attractive Civil Service benefits. What’s more, you can look forward to ongoing training to continually develop your expertise. You’ll also enjoy opportunities for placements across the wider government statistician group.

What we are looking for

We expect you to be a team player with strong problem solving and communication skills. Your flair for analysing data effectively will be more than matched by your ability to present it to all kinds of people in a range of different formats and platforms. Crucially, you are committed to quality and highly motivated to make a difference to the nation in this role.

You’ll need to have, or hope to have by September 2019 a first or second class honours degree in a subject containing formal statistical training – or else an equivalent level of experience in a statistics/data science related field.
