Job description

Based on a live construction site, the Graduate Design Manager will report to the Design Manager and will have design management responsibilities for assigned elements of the project.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and manage the design coordination and development of the assigned project elements
  • Acquire deep understanding of the design brief such as the employer’s requirements and the contractor’s proposals. Manage to ensure the assigned elements are in compliance with them
  • Ensure buildability, cost effectiveness and a high standard of finish
  • Be aware of other elements and the interfaces with these on managing the assigned elements
  • Understand and adhere to the project design management procedures
  • Propose alternatives to improving the project design management procedures
  • Manage the design development and documentation progress of the assigned elements
  • Understand and adhere to the project document control systems
  • Manage the design procurement and development process in consideration of the assigned elements’ programme, cost, health and safety, sustainability and quality requirements
  • Manage the production of the project design by the consultants and communicate the same
  • Manage the installation design by the specialist subcontractors and suppliers
  • Identify and manage the design related risks
  • Identify design driven opportunities for the assigned elements
  • Resolve all design issues including those from the client, authorities and the our project team associated with the assigned elements
  • Provide technical assistance in design oriented cost variations
  • Assist in obtaining the design approvals from the authorities and the client
  • Prepare reports design reports that are accurate and on time
  • Assist in the compilation of the project handover documentation
  • Arrange and attend meeting and produce minutes

Person requirements

Qualifications and experience requirements

  • Be a student expecting to complete a relevant university degree before September 2018 - or a graduate who has successfully completed a degree no earlier than September 2016
  • Are working towards or have obtained a 2:1 or above in a construction related degree
  • Have the right to work in the UK at the time of employment
  • A-levels or equivalent
  • 'C' or above in maths and English GCSE or equivalent
  • Relevant work experience within design over summer/year during studies
  • Ability to comprehend and communicate design related documents such as the drawings, schedules and specifications
  • Experience of working within a team environment
  • Knowledge of design principles and experience in project delivery
  • Experience of delivering excellent results and high personal performance within a role
