Capital Delivery Project Management Graduate Scheme

Job description

When applying for the scheme you’ll have an opportunity to choose from two pathways:

  • Capital Delivery – Project Management

    When you join the Capital Delivery Project Management pathway you’ll work as a Graduate Project Manager. Your work will be varied with the opportunity to explore commercial, safety, and risk & opportunity management techniques, with exposure across several functions including Construction, Planning, Strategy, Operations and Estimating.

    Your strong interpersonal skills will come into their own when you’re building relationships with your stakeholders.

    You could be contributing to high-profile projects, through preparing presentations, reports, or managing key contracts. You will gain an understanding to GRIP (Governance for Rail Investment Projects) which is the project management delivery lifecycle used in Capital Delivery. You’ll also gain a basic level of knowledge in Engineering.

    In addition to all of this, you’ll undertake Leadership Essentials Programme (a 6 module programme that will equip you will key skills, knowledge and behaviours to start you on your leadership journey)
  • Business Change Projects, Network Services

    When joining our Business Change Project Management pathway, you’ll be part of our Network Services function that provides project and business change management across a wide-ranging portfolio of national projects. You will be supporting the delivery of a safer and better performing railway by providing a world class professional services to the wider business organisation.

    You will be involved in project management and business change projects across different areas including:
    - Engineering Assets
    - Telecoms
    - Health & Safety
    - Innovation and new technologies
    - Environment
    - Security
    - Research and Development
    - Information Management
    - Customer Experience

    You will rotate across these areas during your time on the scheme and be involved in the following activities;
    - Investment papers and project planning
    - Delivery of projects to time, cost and quality using appropriate methodology
    - Identifying and engaging with stakeholders
    - Management of project and programme risk
    - Embedding and delivering business change within Network Rail Regions and Routes

These positions are exciting as you will have the opportunity to work across the business, external contractors and with industry partners to deliver Network Rail’s strategic objectives. These can include European Rail Partners, Rail Safety and Standards board, Rail Delivery Group, Universities and Innovate UK.

What professional qualifications could you gain?

During your two year programme, you will undertake a 13 month apprenticeships where you will gain the Association for Project Management Project Management Qualification (APM PMQ) and a Level 4 Associate Project Manager qualification from the Institute for Apprenticeships & Technical Education.

What opportunities are available at the end of the scheme?

Successful completion of the scheme will equip you with the knowledge to apply for a position as a Scheme Project Manager .

As a graduate on this scheme you will have the opportunity to rotate around our wide-ranging portfolio of projects. We also support our graduates to gain some experience outside of our function so that they can develop their skills and railway knowledge further which is key to their future success.

You will be fully supported to develop your competencies in project management as well as completing a 6-module career foundation course whilst on the scheme.

Where you’ll be based

For the Business Change pathway, your base location will be our Milton Keynes office, however we are a national function so flexibility is essential as there will be 6-month placement opportunities in our London offices and other locations.

For the Capital Delivery pathway, opportunities are available across Britain, at key locations including:

  • Eastern
    Derby, Leeds, London Stratford, Peterborough, York
  • North West & Central
    Birmingham, Crewe, Manchester
  • Scotland
  • Southern
    London Blackfriars (Puddle Dock)
    London Southwark (James Forbes House)
    London Waterloo
  • Wales & Western
    Bristol, Cardiff, Exeter, London, Swindon

Please Note: You will rotate at least 3 times across your Region during your two years on scheme, and so flexibility regarding the location of your placement is essential. Depending on the location applied for in your application, you will be assigned to a Region and allocated your placement locations within that Region by the Scheme Manager.

You’re a self-starter with a strong work ethic. You have an inquisitive nature and are not afraid to challenge the way things are done. You’re able to present and communicate alternative ideas in a clear and confident manner. With strong organisation skills, a cool head and an eye for detail, you’re able to solve problems with a calm and pragmatic approach. You enjoy working as part of a team and have empathy towards others.
