Within a Health Analytical team in a national organisation, you’ll face the challenge of an ageing population with complex and varied health needs. We need to tackle this dilemma with changes to our systems and processes in a time of financial constraints, so you’ll take on a variety of complex and interesting challenges ranging from cancer waiting times to maternity reviews, using your analytical expertise to model future activities and approaches.
Providing the tools and evidence base to support your findings, your ability to structure problems, triangulate data and develop evidence-based solutions will be complemented by your ability to translate your insights into understandable information for a variety of audiences – so you’ll need to be a focused and inquisitive individual with fantastic communication skills. You will of course be deeply analytical and highly-numerate, and in turn we can guide you towards an influential career in which your work will define policies and practices for the next generation.
There’s no one-size-fits-all approach to healthcare in England, so your training and experiences will be very diverse too. To get the most out of it, you’ll need to be bright, bold and open-minded. You’ll also need to be flexible and able to juggle a demanding education programme with a challenging full time role. You must be ready to gain exposure to the NHS at different levels, around different cultures and viewpoints - and anywhere in the country.
Over two years, your professional learning will include a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Analysis. At the same time, you’ll develop on the job, through at least three placements across two organisations. Throughout, you’ll enjoy support and guidance from a dedicated mentor and some of the best minds in the NHS.
Unique touches set the scheme apart. Your induction includes 20 days in which you set the agenda, experiencing NHS life on the frontline. So if you want to ride with an ambulance crew or observe an autopsy, you can. Later, you’ll arrange a two-month ‘flexi-placement’ which could take you outside the NHS ̶ it’s about you acquiring new perspectives to bring back to help the NHS.
What we are looking for
Your analytical skills will be crucial, and we will expect you to enjoy breaking a problem down and assessing each element of your findings. With a numerate degree, or a degree with numerate content under your belt (which could be anything from Business to Sociology), you will have the vision to translate data and information into sustainable solutions.
The challenge of taking on diverse placements in a full-time role, while undertaking training and study, means that self-motivation and superb organisational skills are vital. We expect you to be tenacious and resilient, with passion and confidence. Our nationwide remit means you should be ready to make a difference anywhere in England.
You don’t need any previous relevant work experience but you will need:
- Strong analytical capabilities, including the ability to solve problems
- To believe in the principles and values that bind together the communities and people the NHS serves and the staff who work for it
- The potential to become an outstanding leader
- A commitment to improving people's health and their experience of the NHS
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to develop professional networks
- Flexibility, creativity and innovation
If you’ve got the drive, you’ll secure an amazing future. Recent graduates have already progressed to senior NHS posts including head of department and associate director.
A minimum 2:2 degree in a numerate subject, or a subject that has at least 30% numerate content (secured or expected).
