Job description
Leading teams and driving change. Start your career journey in General Management.
The NHS Graduate Management Training Scheme (GMTS) offers trainees a 20-day induction, in-role experience on placements, post-graduate education and pastoral care. Also, the freedom of a 2 month ‘flexi’ placement designed by you. Our programme supports you in developing skills, experience and confidence to begin your leadership journey successfully.
You’ll be on the Scheme for two years and as one of 200 trainees across six specialisms, you will join a network of future leaders in the NHS. Trainees earn an average of £44k in their first NHS role, after graduating from the Scheme.
Join General Management and learn how to lead teams to perform at their best. Our trainees are supported to add value and take responsibility for teams from the start of their journey as managers in the NHS. You’ll develop management and interpersonal skills through working with colleagues, exposing you to different management styles – as well as academic and experiential study modules. You’ll enhance team performance and improve service delivery by setting and meeting key performance indicators.
Recent placements include operational manager of a clinical service area, project manager in a Clinical Commissioning Group, strategy manager in an NHS Trust and service transformation lead in an Integrated Care System.
General Management trainees work towards a Postgraduate Diploma in Healthcare Leadership, awarded by the University of Birmingham. You will also participate in experiential learning and Action Learning Sets, to develop leadership skills using real-world scenarios.
General Management trainees have gone on to succeed in leadership roles across the NHS. Recent alumni roles include: Outpatient Deputy General Manager, Clinical Services Support Manager, Strategy & Partnership Manager and Delivery & Service Improvement Manager.
“People think work in the NHS is all clinical but that’s really not the case. The General Management specialism allows me to work closely with staff and have a positive impact on patients. I wanted to be as involved as possible in a non-clinical position and this was the best way to do that.” Mia, General Management
Benefits
Competitive salary
You’ll receive a minimum starting salary of £29,225 on commencement, plus where applicable (dependant on the location of your placement) the NHS High Cost Area Supplement (HCAS).
All trainees, subject to satisfactory probation and ongoing work and academic performance, will have the opportunity of a salary increase to £31,473 after 12 months.
Fully funded study package
Education is an important component of the NHS GMTS. You’ll study for at least one professional qualification during your time with us. There are no academic costs to trainees, the qualifications are fully funded.
Network
A crucial benefit of the programme is the network you will be part of – not only with other trainees, but experts and leaders, HR and learning professionals as well as other key stakeholders in the programme. This provides a great opportunity to share insights and learn from each other, gaining knowledge about the wider organisation.
NHS Pension Scheme
We will automatically enrol you onto the highly regarded NHS Pension Scheme when you start with us.
Employee Assistance Programme (EAP)
The Employee Assistance Programme is a 24 hours a day 7 days a week confidential service, which can support colleagues with a range of issues including relationships, stress, legal and financial concerns, bereavement and discrimination.
Cycle to work
The Cycle2Work scheme is available through Halfords, Tredz and various independent retailers. It’s run via salary sacrifice, meaning you will pay less tax and National Insurance, allowing you to make savings of up to 47% on the cost of hiring a new bike and equipment. This is to the value of between £100 and £3,000. The scheme is available once you have completed your probation period.
What we are looking for
We’re looking for candidates with potential to develop into the NHS leaders of tomorrow. Our placements are challenging but rewarding and you’ll be required to undertake post-graduate study.
A commitment to improving people’s health and their experience of the NHS is crucial of course. If you’re thinking about joining our Scheme, it’s important to consider the principles and values that will become core to your role as a trainee and as a future leader. The NHS Constitution for England sets out the principles that bind together the communities and people the NHS serves – patients and public – and the staff who work for it. The Scheme, and indeed all NHS jobs, are open to eligible candidates from all backgrounds.
