Sam — Business operations and logistics graduate

Nissan UK

Sam studied business management at university before joining the graduate scheme based at Nissan Motor Manufacturing in Sunderland

What were you looking for in a placement?

I was looking for some real world business experience. I wanted a challenge to develop my skills throughout my placement year at Nissan. I was able to deal with suppliers and attend operation management meetings to gain practical experience.

How did you move onto the graduate scheme?

I had my foot in the door from my placement at Nissan, I had experience in how the business operates and this has helped me progress onto the graduate scheme. As a graduate I have more high level work with more responsibility, which is a great learning and development opportunity to progress in my career.

What’s a typical day like?

I am based in operations management, my time is split between operations and project management. Operations work with the production line on a daily basis to monitor the performance of the shop floor. It requires quick reactions and problem solving skills to solve any issues with the supply chain or inventory management.

What skills do you need for a role in supply chain management?

You can apply with any degree and there are graduates on my intake who studied maths and even geography. To be suitable for the role you need to have a logical way of thinking which concentrates on how you solve issues and approach a project. If you are up for a challenge and can react to situations you should apply to Nissan.
