Software Developer

Job description

This is an exciting opportunity to join a small team developing and maintaining a unique suite of simulation and optimisation applications used by consultants at the company and by external clients.

These applications range from small mapping and data analysis tools to sophisticated simulation models used to explore the performance of large service providers such as ambulance and fire services.

You will be involved in creating applications that are key to much of the modelling work carried out by the company. Day-to-day, this will consist of a mixture of independent work to develop, test and maintain applications and components to meet requirements and collaboration with other members of the development team to plan work and share ideas. The role will also involve working closely with users to understand their needs and remedy issues.

What we offer

While our work is important, the atmosphere is open and relaxed, with everyone pulling together and working towards the same goals. We are a collaborative, intelligent and friendly team working in a high-quality environment.

The role is based at our offices in Reading. We provide training, support and career development opportunities.

We value innovation and encourage employees to follow their own interests in learning and exploring new technologies and techniques.

We offer a starting salary of £27,500 to £32,500, plus a generous pension and bonus programme. Other benefits include substantial annual leave and purchase scheme, life insurance, as well as opportunities for flexibility in working hours.

What we are looking for

We are looking for graduates with a background in computer science or other numerate subject and some experience of software development. Candidates should be comfortable writing algorithmic code or with mathematical modelling.

As many of our key components are written in C# .Net, at least one year of experience with this in a production environment is essential. We also use a wide range of other languages and frameworks where they fit our needs, including web frontend technologies (JavaScript and Angular), SQL and Python. Knowledge of one or more of these would be beneficial, as would experience with client-server architectures.

Accepted degree subjects

  • physics
  • mathematics
  • geology and geographical science
  • computer sciences and IT
  • electronic and electrical engineering
