Applied Research Assistant

Job description

PML Applications Ltd is seeking to recruit a confident, practical and adaptive individual to provide project delivery support in a busy, fast paced marine environmental consultancy. The role will involve wide variety of tasks from desk based reviews, to manual tasks such as deploying and operating marine coating test rigs at a marina, and assisting with ship-board tests of ballast water treatment systems. The role will involve manual handling in the laboratory and the field. Microbial analysis of water samples will also be a significant part of the role, and good laboratory skills and record keeping are essential. We are seeking a motivated and committed person who can apply a scientific approach to our varied portfolio of commercial marine projects. There will be a requirement to work on occasional weekends, with flexible hours and occasional overnight stays.

What we are looking for

  • High quality scientific writing skills
  • Ability to follow tightly defined scientific methods and protocols in compliance with international standards and health and safety requirements.
  • Competency and physical ability in field work settings (manual handling and hand tool use etc.)
  • Competency and experience in laboratory settings including use of pipettes and microscopes
  • Attention to detail in experimental work and ability to maintain records
  • Basic microbiological assay skills
  • Experience of data handling and analysis
  • Comfortable and capable of working in small teams and without direct supervision.
  • Good communicator, and able to work to short deadlines.
  • Calm, adaptive and positive problem solving approach
  • Willingness to travel and work occasional weekends / flexible hours.
  • Driving licence

Desirable skills / Experience:

  • Marine scientific training
  • Experience of microbiological analysis of water samples
  • Experience of plankton and biofouling organism taxonomy
  • Able to undertake statistical analysis of data with packages such as R, and Primer
  • Marine consultancy or research background


Degree level or equivalent scientific training and I.T. literacy (e.g. Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
