Job description

Our Homestay programme offers you the opportunity to immerse yourself in Chinese culture and gain a unique insight into life within a Chinese home.

Staying with a carefully screened family for a period of one, two or three months during the school holidays, you will spend 15 hours per week giving your host’s child one-to-one English tuition in exchange for accommodation and food.

Our host families are extremely welcoming and respectful and they are eager to both learn about their foreign guest’s culture and to teach them about their own. You will be treated as a member of the family and shown around the local area, as well as given the chance to try local foods and learn the language.

We place one applicant per household, however you will be in close contact with other participants and there will be plenty of opportunities to socialise outside of your host family during your free time. Our partners in China are very proactive in organising frequent social activities for participants and they provide round-the-clock support to help deal with any problems.

This immersive experience not only gives you the chance to gain a good understanding of Chinese culture, but also make new friends and explore a fascinating country from a unique perspective!

Location, Duration and Benefits
We have a number of families all over China looking to welcome someone into their home, meaning you could choose a placement in a city like Beijing, Chengdu, Shanghai or Shenzhen for a duration of 1, 2 or 3 months. Applicants are given the chance to express preferences in terms of location and internship duration during the application process.

You will receive a monthly allowance of around £100 if you complete the required tutoring hours. With our Homestay Programme, we also offer the following:

  • Pre-departure orientation and cultural training
  • Access to our lesson plan library and member’s area
  • Airport pick up and orientation in China
  • Single room accommodation
  • Three home-cooked meals per day
  • Monthly cultural activity
  • Local support in China, available 24/7
  • Support with teaching

Travel Opportunities
Homestay participants are expected to remain in the host city for the duration of their placements, however we encourage you to travel either before or after the placement in order to experience more of this exciting country. Travel around China is affordable and quite straightforward, so you may wish to visit other cities with people you’ve met during the homestay.

Each year many Teach English In China programme participants travel to exciting destinations such as Shanghai, Beijing, Xi’an and Chengdu following their placements. Upon enrolment onto our Homestay programme, you will receive access to our online Member’s Area which contains travel guides written by our teachers and can help you to plan your trip.

Flexible start dates, placements for one-three months
