Job description

It’s difficult to imagine a more varied, fast-moving and complex environment than a port. Every year, The Bristol Port Company receives and dispatches over 600,000 vehicles, 25% of all UK aviation fuel imports and millions of tonnes of goods which contribute £millions to the UK economy.

Joining our Commercial Team, you will play a key role in developing the business internationally by undertaking research into key markets and responding to new business leads. You’ll also contribute to significant commercial projects and become a point of contact for all-important existing customers which typically include international shipping lines, logistics companies, global brands and market leaders in industries such as automotive, energy, bulk products and leisure.

This is a graduate trainee role that offers the potential for fast progress – with occasional national and international travel to attend client meetings, including around Europe. There’s plenty of challenges to step into in this role and having soaked up experience and confidence whilst shadowing your team colleagues, you’ll benefit from comprehensive support and training in order to develop your career across our business.

Company information

The Bristol Port Company was established in 1991 and we operate two deep water ports (Avonmouth and Royal Portbury) on the Bristol Channel, close to the city of Bristol.

With £500m+ of investment, we have created some of the world’s most advanced port facilities and services, employ c600 people and are the UK’s premier automotive port, as well as being well-established in sectors such as dry and bulk liquid cargoes, containers and coal.

There is much more to our business than simply loading and unloading vessels! We offer port to destination solutions and services, including managed warehousing, specialist handling, logistics planning and management, and road and rail services – which offers a huge amount of scope for your career development.

Person requirements

We are looking for someone who is excited by huge, complex international networks, and keen to understand and make smart commercial decisions across them.

Highly numerate, analytical and detail-focused, you’ll comfortably approach market research, forecasting and costing projects and quickly develop strong project management skills in both a new business and account management capacity.

You should offer confident communication skills in order to deal effectively with senior contacts in major companies and relate complex business requirements in a fast-moving industry.

You must be prepared to travel throughout the UK and overseas, and given our location and environment, you will need a full driving licence and daily use of a car.

Qualifications and experience requirements

We will consider any degree discipline, but any work experience or specific studies in business, transport or logistics would be favoured.
