Transport Modelling & Analysis Graduate Scheme

Job description

Our Professional Services teams focus on the employees at the heart of our business.

Our world-leading transport modelling teams play a crucial role in TfL’s evidence-based decision-making processes. You will have the opportunity to gain experience across our transport modelling and data teams, ranging from strategic London-wide topics to local area micro-simulation of individual person movements. You will learn about the data that is available at TfL, how it informs our models & analytical tools, how to use our models & analytical tools, the interactions between them and how the outputs are used by stakeholders across TfL and beyond. Your interest in transport combined with your degree in a numerate subject will enable you to thrive in this role.

Sustainability

Sustainability is intrinsic to TfL’s work ethos, and we ensure that we operate in a sustainable way to protect and regenerate the natural world. The models and data you will be working with play a fundamental role in ensuring decisions being made are aligned with a sustainable future, for example a shift towards public transport and active travel to reduce carbon and air pollutant emissions.

What will you be doing?

As a graduate, your 2-year development programme will be made up of up to 4 placements, including at least one in each of our 3-transport modelling and data analysis teams. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career.

We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every graduate’s journey is unique.

Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:

Placement 1 – Operational Modelling and Visualisation

You will use one or more of our industry-leading highway network models, local area micro-simulation models or junction models to support the design & implementation of signal timing strategies or the design, implementation & operation of road enhancement schemes, for example a new cycle route, bus lane or junction to access a new large development. You will prepare the models, informed by data, to ensure they are suitable for the assessment. You will then undertake the assessment, analyse the outputs and use our visualisation capabilities to present complex modelling analysis in a manner suitable for our varied stakeholders.

Placement 2 – Public Transport Service Planning

You will undertake modelling and analysis to inform decisions about passenger benefits from changes to public transport services. You will use one or more of the team’s station/pedestrian, train service or public transport network models. You will work with stakeholders to identify the appropriate scope of work and with technical experts to ensure the models are used accurately. These changes could include updates to bus or rail services to better meet passenger demand across London, plans to upgrade stations or understanding the impact of temporary closures due to engineering works. You will become familiar with the wealth of public transport data we use to inform service changes to Buses, Underground, Elizabeth line, DLR, London Overground and Trams.

Placement 3 – Strategic Analysis

You will work with data and tools at a London-wide level informing key questions around environmental challenges and how London may change in different future scenarios. You will work with our strategic transport modelling suite, MoTiON, or maybe one of emerging innovative forecasting tools such as our agent-based model and our land-use transport interaction model. There could also be the opportunity to work with our environmental models and/or the data we collect to monitor progress towards our ambitious targets. You will work on themes that are major challenges for London and beyond, such as air quality, carbon or how major schemes, such as High Speed 2, will impact London. You are expected to complete each of the placements outlined above. There is scope to tailor each placement to your skills and interests due to the breadth of work in each team. You will be expected to learn the basics of transport modelling and understand that data that is available to TfL and how it is used. Your placements may become more specialised, for example, data science, modelling or analytics if your interests move in that direction.

Where can this career take you?

Upon completing the scheme, you are expected to roll-off into one of our modelling or analytical teams and be an active participant in those communities. You will work in close liaison with project managers and sponsors, as well as fellow modellers and analysts, to understand the objectives of the technical work and tailor the scope accordingly. You will keep abreast of the latest travel trends to ensure they are represented in our analysis.

As you gain more experience you will be expected to lead ever larger areas of work and, eventually, manage a small team. TfL is a large organisation and there will be opportunities to gain experience and progress.

What training and support will you get?

Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements.

We’ll support your technical development through practical training with our industry leading experts. There will also be the opportunity for training in topics such as presentations skills and project management. We'll support your professional development through a combination of mentoring opportunities, structured networking opportunities with other graduates and alumni as well as the external transport modelling and analysis community.
